Really. I think it's mean to keep your dog outside. I don't get
If you wanted a dog in fhe first place why would you keep it outside? It just doesn't make sense to me. It's not a horse.
My brother and his family got a dog and he said "But we keep it outside all the time". I said "You keep it outside all the time? Poor thing." He said: "No it's okay, it's an outdoor dog."
Hmmm... I still think it's mean.
i totally agree with you. i have 2 doggie doors. one on the main door going onto the screened porch and one on the porch going into the yard. my dogs are free to either be in or out as they please.

well some areas are just warm and it is ok to let your live outside and when a dog lives outside it doesn't mean that the owner loves the dog any less!!!!Besides if they weren't pets dog would have to survive alone out in the wild.besides you know wht really is mean???those poor puffy dogs that some stuck up owners have, that give those poor dogs pedicures and have a personal groomer 24/7 and are not allowed to go out side and play cause they will bring dirt in the house.and the only interaction they have with the outside world is getting carried aroung in their owner's louis vuiton bag while she or he goes shopping!!!!!!!!!!now you tell me what is worst!!!!!!!!!dogs aren't dolls to play with!!!for heaven's sake, dog are suppose to have fun and play outside and get dirty!!!!!!!!!!!if the dog is small,ok it won;t survive outside but if it large it will not only survive but alsohave a blast!!!!!!!see???fyi horses spend a few hours outside.they live in stables!!!

I think that for the most part you are right. All of my dogs will always be inside pets. My dad says that he has had dogs live both inside and outside, but he finds that they are happier inside so he likes to keep them inside.
Dogs are social animals and desire companionship.
There are also breeds which do not do well outside. Like an English Bulldog. For them, temperatures over 80 degrees can kill them, and I believe that they have a low temperature that they can't tolerate too.My pastor keeps his two GSDs outside, but he takes good care of both of them and they seem very happy. An owner who keeps the dog outside isn't necessarily bad, but it's best for the dog to be inside. Reasons that people keep dogs outside include:
-because the dog tears up the house (which can be corrected through proper training, keeping the dog outside doesn't teach it not to tear things up)
-because there's not enough room inside ( why did they choose that breed then!?!)
There are others which don't come to mind right now.

Evidently you haven't considered working dogs who are guarding livestock...Great Pyrenees have been happily guarding livestock for centuries long before there was even the concept of pet dogs...They are happy doing what they were meant to do & have a purpose beyond keeping our humble company...So long as a dog is happy, fed, groomed, & cared for I'd say let a dog be happy!
I think people are mean who do not consider what might make their dog happiest even if it doesn't satisfy their own wants.
Now people who get a dog & tie it in the backyard, give it nothing to do & don't interact with the dog...That is another story!

I totally agree! I think sometimes it's ok for short periods of time, but ALL the time?
When I adopted my dog from the shelter her previous owners kept her outside. If you watch movies like 8 Below her kind all live outside in the snow as do most sled dogs from colder climates.
When I got Maya I gave her the option. I always leave the backyard door open so she can go out there any time. She chooses to be inside. She does spent a lot of time outside going for runs/hikes, playing at the park and going to the beach. But when she home she enjoys to be inside around people.
I think in movies like Eight Below and those pups who live in Alaska, they're ok outside because they have other dogs with them.
Safety wise I wouldn't leave a dog out either. My next door neighbor's dog got tangled in his leash and almost strangled himself. And the owners still keep him outside!

Larka and I work outside. We work at a ranch. Some days we will be outside for eight or so hours, sometimes we'll be outside from dawn to dusk working the horses. I don't find a problem with it, and I don't see the difference between working my dogs outdoors for the day and keeping a dog outside with mental stimulation, health care, exercise, and love.
Some dogs who are kept outside are just doing what they have been bred to do- protect livestock and guard the home. A dog doing what it was bred to do will be a more enjoyable companion. An Anatolian Shepherd wasn't bred to be a cooped-up apartment dog, and it seems more logical for that breed to find a home where it will perform it's duty as a livestock dog.
Whatever makes the dog happiest ya know?

did you ever think that dogs might actually like playing outside?

You said a dog is not a horse? Jake is close to being one, he;s huge! He and Chaser love to play outside and get really restless when they come in the house. They come in the garage everynight. They like to come in sometimes when theres a storm or when its really hot ot cold outside but other wise they love staying outside.
