When you crating your puppy i want her to be able to occupy herself but should i put treats and kongs in the crate?

When my puppy is in her crate i want her to be occupied but if i put little treats in her puppy kongs i would think she would be needing to go to the bathroom. Should I still put kongs in her crate?

I've been training my puppy to go into a cage, shes doing very well.
I've got a large cage, shes got room to run around in it if she wants too. I've split the cage into sleeping area and toilet area, tho i do take her out before i leave.
I have put a few toys in there for her, mostly things she can chew on, a bowl of water and i also give her a couple of puppy biscuits, i also leave the tv on for her or you could leave a radio on, just gives them a bit of comfort if they can hear a bit of noise. I then lock the cage and of i go, i don't speak to her when i leave.

As you thought, you need to limit how much food you leave in the crate with the puppy. I usually leave nothing but a sturdy chew toy. The Kong is fine, but only leave the very smallest one filled with anything. Part of the purpose of the crate is to limit activity to allow the puppy to go without having to relieve itself. I never leave any water either. You want the puppy to spend most of its time sleeping while you are away. It only needs room to stretch out.

I am careful to never leave the puppy more than 4-5 hours. My wife or I have always been able to make it back. It works well for us even with 7 week old Labs. Smaller dogs may not be able to go as long. If you can't make it back before 5 hours or less, see if a neighbor or professionall dog walker can give her a break.

You can put the kong in the crate but just remember to take her out every hour to potty.
If you are at work have someone come to your house and take the pup outside to go potty.

When my dog was a puppy I did the same exact thing as Maggie stated in her response. My dog is a minature poodle but I had a large crate (later used by a lab so that's how big it was). I made one side her comfy bed with toys and one side newspapers with water and treats. She quickly learned which side of the crate to pee and poop on and which side to sleep and play on. When I was home I always left the crate open and my dog loved it and used to go in there and play. When she was about a year old she decided she like the couch better! That's when I got rid of the crate. Enzo btw is adorable! Best of Luck!
