I am getting a 11 week old toy australian shepherd puppy from a breeder in Minnesota and it is being flown to me. I was not big on shipping a puppy in the first place but after doing some research I fell in love with the breed. Sadly all the breeders around me, aren't what I would call responsible and reputable breeders. I have been in contact with the breeder and have total confidence in her, and she has shipped puppies before but I'm still nervous.
What should I expect when picking my puppy up from the airport? what should I bring with me? Also it is a 3 hour car ride from the airport back home, any advice for the car ride? I've been doing research on it but would love more advice and info.
This is my first dog and I'm just so nervous/excited and just want to be the best owner I can be.
Thanks for your help!
1. make sure dog has appointment with vet now.
2. I have had pup's on 10 hr flights with delays so bring extra newspaper to line a crate.
3. Buy a large crate because the one she will outgrow and shipped in is small.
4. Bring a towel for big messes.
5. collar and leash
6. water and bowls.
7. Allow her to potty in a empty parking lot free from chemical, like oil antifreeze, most likely no dog has poo'd on asphalt, so I would stay out of grassy spots, for the risk of avoiding parvo.
8. don't worry about food, as it is going to add to her maybe upset tummy, and the car motion. Just water, I usually buy a bottled water or better yet bring a fresh gallon of water from tap.
that's all I can think of. good luck and congrats

Take a collar and leash with you. The collar should be about 10'' from the buckle to the middle hole. An adjustable Martingale style one would be good. As soon as you can, get it outside to a grassy area and let it walk around. Try to avoid areas other dog owners may have used. near traffic may be the safest place for a young puppy.
Have a soft bristled brush and paper towels to clean it up the best you can if it fouled itself in the shipping crate.
I have never picked up a puppy from being flown, but have made long car trips home with one. Usually it is no problem. We put the puppy on the floor of the car and they sleep most of the trip. Don't use dog exercise areas at rest areas. Too much risk of exposing your puppy to disease. If you stop at one, carry the puppy along the ramp away from the area. Put it down on leash near the traveled area to relieve itself. After giving it a bit of a run, carry it back to the car.
I am running out of room, so will continue PM.

I have picked up a few pups before and they are usually very frightened and confused. They probably won't respond to you very well at first. Just make sure you have leash and collar and take it outside as soon as you can to help it calm down and let it do its thing outside. Don't be in such a hurry to put it in your car give it time to readjust to you. Bring some treats and I mean like nice juicy meaty treats to help ease it as well. Hope this helps.

I picked up my cane corso puppy from the philly airport. Be prepared for the plane to be late. My baby sat at the airport in TX for about three hours because of a bad storm. When I picked him up, he was so scared and at the very back of the crate. The car ride was only for about 35 min so I held him the whole ride home. Do bring a leash, collar, let the puppy use the potty before the ride home and maybe stop in between. Good luck and enjoy your new puppy!!!!

Bring a collar, leash, and maybe some blankets and/or a dog carrier. I could also reccomend maybe bringing along a few small treats to show your love for your new pup. Hope this helps, and paw mail me with anything else! Good luck!
Lots of Licks,
Jet
P.S. If the collar had I.D. tags, even without a name, that would be helpful, too!
