What shampoo is best for a beagle.

I have a beagle and I don't know if maybe he is allergic to my washing detergent or what. He is scraching all the time, he get under my bed and scratches on the frame of the bed. He has worn off his hair. He doesn't have flees. I have tried every kind of shampoo, oatmeal, medicated, green tea medicated, sensitive all of them. Help!

I think your dog may have fleas. I would recommend a flea shampoo from www.drsfosterandsmith.com Just go to the search box after you click the tab Dog and type in Flea Shampoo. Before that though, I would recommend calling your veterinairian. If you can't get an appointment for a few days, I would go ahead and order the Flea Shampoo. I also recommend getting the Oatmeal Shampoo as well, just to make sure the skin doesn't dry out.

If your Beagle is already on anti-flea medication, (K9 Advantix, etc) than maybe you used a shampoo before that dried out your Beagle's skin, Talk to your vet, or call a professional groomer about this to see what they recommend. Whether your dog has fleas or dried out skin, I would recommend Doctors Foster and Smith Oatmeal Shampoo. Hope this helps, and paw mail me if you need anything!

Lots of Licks,

Jet

About 90% of the time, these symptoms are actually due to fleas and owners often don't *realize* their dogs have them. Even one flea can cause numerous bites and irritation, and if your dog is among those who is sensitive to bites, it makes it even worse. You might not see fleas, even if you use a flea comb. And those products like Advantage and Frontline don't really keep 100% of fleas off your dog.

If this were my dog, I'd take him to the vet to rule out any autoimmune issues that cause rashes or itching. Your vet can also tell you if the dog truly is flea free and can recommend a sensitive skin shampoo for your dog. When a dog has flea irritated skin, he can be extra sensitive to anything, and baths will dry out the skin, so make sure you're not OVER-bathing him and inadvertantly making things worse.

Personally, I'd be willing to bet he has a flea or two and once you address that issue, he might improve greatly. Good luck to you!

Jack makes some good points. Before bathing him, pull the hair forward at the base of the tail. if yo can see or feel dark, reddish specks, it is flea dirt. What ever you are doing for fleas, you need to talk to the vet about something better.

I seldom if ever bathe a dog. You can control shedding, odors, and dirt by brushing regularly. Usually I use a soft bristled brush. In the peak spring and fall shedding seasons, I switch to a wire slicker brush.

A flea shampoo is only going to kill the fleas that may be on the dog at the time of the bath. As soon as he steps out of the tub fleas will jump back on. ANY shampoo will also kill these fleas WITHOUT the harsh poisons in a flea shampoo. For flea control, less is better!! We use and recommend Frontline or one of the monthly products... they work and they are much safer than shampoos and dips.

Itchy Beagle - Poor kid - you may just have some environmental allergies;
How about some Johnson's baby shampoo, the kind for humans...very mild for dogs, too.

Dieta

Considering he has balding spots and none of the shampoos have helped it is best he have a skin scrap so that he can be tested for mites.
The vet can do some testing other than that also to find out what is wrong.

Pamela - Adopted!!!!

If he's not on Revolution, he most likely has mange. It's caused by mites you can't see. You may however notice small pimple like spots on his belly, elbows, armpits, chest/neck and top of nose.

Sarcoptic mange is contagious from one dog to a surface then to another dog, no fault on your part.
Treatment, Revolution ever 2 weeks for 3 treatments then monthly there after.

this sounds nuts, but I got the mites on my leg, rash where the dog rubs when walking, worked on me so I tried it on her.
