What is My Dog A Pom or Chiuahua?

Ok here is the deal. I have a Pomeranian puppy thats 10 months old that I bought from a credible pet store for about $600 to $700. They told me he is pure breed and was the runt in the litter, and has two purebreed poms that were also runts in the their litters. Up till now I thought he was a pom, but my friend got a long haired chihuahua today and my dog Jasper looks identical to it. HELP ME !!! IS HE A POM OR NOT? :((((!

here is three pics:

Pom. But Chi mixed into him is possible.

You seem up-tight. Please relax. Even if he isn't pure Pom, he's still your dog and being mixed or a different breed than you originally though won't make him any less wonderful. Enjoy the cute little fellow.
I can understand how it is to be busting at the seams to know what breed a dog is. For a long time, I kept asking people on here over and over asking if my dog is really a Papillon/Sheltie mix and got a variety of answers. Some said probably, some said no, some said Corgi, some said Pomeranian.
I'm ashamed to say that I even got depressed at the notion that he may not have Sheltie in him because I had my heart so set on owning a Sheltie.

(On a side note, credible store or not, no reputable breeder sells to pet stores because they want to be the ones to screen homes so that the dog gets a good home.)

I agree with the other answer. As long as you love it, it really doesn't matter. I have a long haired Chi that I found a few years ago. He had been beated and starved. I thought he was A Pom but when I took him to the Vet I was told he was a long haired Chi, this was a shock to me since I had 2 Chi's at home, but he was long haired. I know it is different for you because you bought him but I ended up spending more than what you spent and I adore the little guy. I think long haired Chi's look very much like Poms but I am sure you could find out from a vet. Good Luck and enjoy what ever he is! :)

Do you have any photos showing your dog standing, all four paws on the ground, from the side, so that we can see his build and structure, especially his body shape and tail carriage? That would be very helpful to eliminate any guesswork.

Looking at the "now" photo, he does not look like a Pomeranian to me, he looks like a long-coated Chihuahua.

On a side note, please know that there is no such thing as a "reputable" or "credible" pet store. ALL pet stores get their puppies from brokers and commercial breeders (puppy mills). They don't know whether dogs are purebred or whether they were "the run", as they have no involvement with the dogs until they arrive at their store like inventory. Most commercial breeders don't know which pup is which because they have so many at any given time. Pet store employees will tell you a dog is "the runt" to get you to buy it!!!

I say he's a Pom- Chi mix. I totally see the long-haired Chi, but I see Pom for the fluffy undercoat. I almost see Sheltie in his face but he probably has none.
He's very cute though!
If it makes you feel any better, he could very well be a full blooded Pom and we are just saying he LOOKS like a Chi. Looks and what he really is are two different things.
If you really want to know, buy a DNA test. It should tell you if he's a pure Pom or a mix.
The cheapest I've seen is on Drs. Foster and Smith website for about $50.

Miss Buddie

He's probably a little bit of both. Pet stores buy their dogs from breeders who are generally a tad bit less than ethical and it's no telling what his breed really is.

What matters is that he's yours and you love him very much.

In order to get a purebreed that you KNOW is a purebreed, you have to get it directly from the breeder, which is a much better bet for many reasons.

Bandit

I don't think he is a purebred pom. Ever pomeranian I have seen are very fluffy, my aunts are fluffy and only get thin hair when they are sick. I think he is either a long hair chihuahua or a chihuahua/pom mix.
pics of long haired chihuahua~ www.dogbreedinfo.com there are a couple pages of pics here you have to go threw them
pics of chi/pom mixes~

I don't like pet stores either, like previous posters said they are not dependable on what they say and were they get there dogs from, they are just out there to make money. Your pup is still very cute!

Daisy

Looks like half pom and half chi to me because I see bit of both breeds in there lol. Very cute puppy dog regardless. Pet stores will never admit it but no reputable breeder sells to pet stores. The breeders are large scale breeding facilities known as a puppy mill. In fact most pet store workers dont even really know where their puppies come from. But no matter the pup is yours and you love him and you should seems like such a little doll.

Kolbe

Unfortunately there is no such thing as a "reputable pet store" unless you are dealing with a store that helps adopt out animals from local shelters.

Regardless of whether or not your dog is a purebred, I'm sure you will love him the same, and he'll love you.

Benji

First, never buy from a pet store, they get their dogts from puppy mills, always go to the breeder and meet the parents and see the conditions. At this point, if you love him, does it really matter? Please stop the puppy mill torture industry, there are so many beautiful poms up for adoptions at local shelters, and they are for free.

Jack

I will say that when my pom Jack was that age he went thru what I called his porcupine phase & his coat wasn't anything like it is now. It was thin & even sparse in some places. I was sitting at the vets & the man next to me had a beautiful fluffy white pom. When he asked me what kind of dog Jack was and I said a Pom, he said "I'm so sorry." lol ... as he matured his full coat came in, now he's a regular fluff ball but only in the winter time. During summer he gets a major hair cut.

He looks like a mix of both actually. What you could do is search "long haired chihuahua" and "pomeranian" on the interenet and see if you can find any of those show dog pictures and see if you can see any similarities (curly tail, body shape, ear shape, ect).

Unfortunately, I know that no matter how good you think the pet shop is most of the time their the worst possible place to buy a puppy (try googling "puppy mills". I work at an animal shelter and I've met people who bought $500-$1,000 dogs from "good" pet stores and they turn out to be mutts (one lady thought she was getting a purebred teacup poodle when it was actually a bichon mix).

Skyline

Your dog looks like a Chihuahua x Pom. Definitely -not- purebred Pomeranian. Everything except his nose reminds me of a Long Hair Chihuahua.
I also wanted to tell you...there is no such thing as a 'credible pet store'. Unless your dog is registered with the AKC or Canadian Kennel Club (or other reputable registry) there is no way to prove he is purebred. Just some food for thought.
He is however very cute!

Omg! Your dogs looks like my Teddys twin! Or close..LOL I know I'm replying a little late, but I think you should relax.. Your dog looks like a pom to me! And if you check out the history of poms, they say in the info I've read up on that underneath all the hair they do resemble chihuahahs.. I could be wrong, but I think what your probably noticing is that his nose isn't super short like some poms? I wanted a baby face- which is the short nosed pom-- but sometimes they just grow out of it.. And then theres the hair factor- it all really depends on if you brush them daily and against the grain so their hair will stand up..
I say just enjoy your baby! :) Hes adorable!

Watch at your own risk, but this is where your dog came from:
www.youtube.com

Your dog is definitely a mutt. Meaning, not purebred, meaning, the pet store owner lied to you. NEVER BUY A PET STORE PUP!
I see at least three breeds in your dog:
Chihuahua, Papillon, and a little bit of Pom.
Pet store pups often have diseases and defects that appear later on in life. If I were you, I would file a complaint about the owner lying to you. At my local shelter, I saw pups that looked exactly like that. They were 150$ including spay/neuter, vaccinations, toys, and a doggie bed. Please don't shop, adopt.
Not saying you should give away your baby, just please don't shop at pet stores that sell puppies. It's highly unethical.
Love, Rosie

Long hair chihuahua's frequently look like Pom's and vice a versa. My long chihuahua is 1/4 pom. His granfather on his mom's side was a black pom. His dad was a long hair chihuahua. I think Ian got the best of both parents. Most people that see him that have had chihuahua's know right away that he is a chihuahua, but other people take one look at his tail and think he is a pom. Either way, he is adorable. He is 8 years old now and I am just crazy about him.

In my opinion, the pictures of your dog looks like he is pom.
