What is a safe way to clean my Lhasa apse's eye area after the tear stains have hardened?

My dog does not like for me to touch his eye area, so when I go to clean his eyes, he jerks his head. I'm afraid I will hurt him. We rescued him about two and a half years ago, so he didn't start with us as a pup. He was not taken care of in his original home, so he's not used to grooming.

I just need some advice as to what I could do to help him. Is there a tool I can purchase to help remove the gunk? Or is there a natural way that would make it easier to remove?

Check out Angel Eyes. That *should* prevent the tear stains. However gunky eyes can be a sign of a food reaction or other things, so maybe you want to look into that!

Mini

Mini has teary eyes because her eyelids are a little more turned in on the bottom. (it could only be fixed by surgery in her case) Anyways, we just use a warm washcloth if the tears have already hardened. Good luck!

I always use a warm wash cloth to clean their eyes with. The warm water will help to loose the gunk that has hardened. With our Chihuahuas, they tend to have watery eyes, so I usually clean their faces every day just to keep their faces clean and prevent excessive build-up.

Tear stains can be caused by several things. Usually it's a hereditary trait that is more common in certain breeds. They can also be caused by poor diet and allergies. If your dog has excessive watery eyes, I'd check with your vet to rule out any thing such as allergies or conjunctivitis.

I have not personally used the Angel Eyes product, but I have known people who have had fantastic results. You must be careful with other products like that though - most of them actually contain some type of steroid and other ingredients that can, over time, be harmful to your dog's health. Always check with your vet before you use it, just to be sure.

Best of luck.

what i do when i am bathing a dog with bad dried up tear stains. while the dog is in the tub with the shampoo all sudds up i take a flea comb and comb it out , because while the the dog is being wash the the tearr stain are soft and wet and esyer to com out vs if you comb it out while the tear stain is dried, and harded up under the eye area and it hurts the dog and that why he is doing what he is doing . and when he get profesionally groomed the groomer can also shave out that stuff as well but don't do that unless you know what you are doing .
