The first ingrediant should be meat

California Naturals is a very good simplistic food if thats what you are looking for. Its easy on the tummy and a very good price. You want a food that has a meat meal as 1st ingredient, 2nd and 3rd even better. Make sure the meat is specified like chicken meal not poultry meal. By products are bad as it consists of all the left over stuff from the carcus, hair even. Corn is bad as it is a cheap filler that causes allergies and it poops out whole so they get no nutritional value from it at all. Glueten is also bad is causes lots of allergy problems and is very cheap ingredient. Wheat is another useless unneeded ingredient. Meniadone is also bad as it has been band from being used in any human foods it is linked to causing liver problems and other problems. www.dogfoodanalysis.com is a great site to look at. It teaches you what each ingredient is, what makes it good and what makes it bad.

We feed Purina Pro Plan Lamb & Rice on the recommendation of our vet. It's good food that's easy to find and easy on your budget. They put it on sale all the time at Petsmart and you can get coupons on the Purina website. We've been very pleased with it.

Most dogs will thrive on most foods. No one food is right for all dogs. Chances are, if your dog is doing OK on what you are feeding now, it is as good as anything. Leave well enough alone and stick to it.
Much of what you read about dog food is based on what people think about the ingredients. As far as I know the only ones that have done any studies on which foods are best are the dog food companies and the service dog schools. Neither publishes their results. The service dog schools do have those caring for their dogs giving them common brands such as Iams, Pro Plan, Science Diet, etc.

If cost is one of your primary concerns, you may want to consider Costco's Kirkland brand. Considering the low price, this is actually a very good food, with a better ingredients list than many of the more expensive store foods like Iams.
I would avoid brands of dog foods that contain a lot of grains, especially if grains are among the first five ingredients. Ingredients are listed by amount - largest amounts at the top and smallest amounts in the back.
Dogs were designed by nature to eat and digest meats - their jaws and digestive systems are two obvious clues to this. While dogs can do okay with grains, they are not really designed to digest them, as they are primarily carnivores.
As for pet food companies and service dog schools - pet food companies publish A LOT of their studies because this benefits them, especially when it supports (or can be made to support) their claims. And the big service dog schools feed what they feed because it is donated to them by pet food companies.

Hi Buddy, I am also a Border Collie/German Shepherd mix. I could eat a horse, poop just a little (run it off) and eat more. I have been eating California Natural Puppy, with a spoonful of plain yogurt to keep my poop firm enough. But, my family (human family), will hold their noses and run out of the room, light candles, spray air freshener because I have silent but deadly gas. Mommy says I smell like piggie. I never care. But Mom is trying a new food to see if it will go away. I like the food, I like all food.
Mom won't buy the Grocery store stuff, but Kirkland, from Costco is not bad for the low price.

Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul is a decent food with a decent price. It has 4 meat ingredients listed first--Chicken, Turkey, Chicken Meal, and Ocean Fish Meal. Which, aside from the price, is the reason I chose it in the first place. Among the other ingredients is grain, but it's the best I can afford. And I have seen no corn in it, which is another plus.
I can get an 18 lb bag of it for $24 at Pet Supplies "Plus".
You can learn more at dogfoodanalysis.com and dogfoodproject.com. No matter what others insist, looking at both sides is essential when looking for the side to go with.
I've been on both sides...I used to feed Purina, Pedigree, Iams and all the other doggie crack from the grocery store. After actually learning more about the other side, I stopped feeding these.
You need to use your head. While of course one should get a "professional" opinion from an "expert", don't take it as gospel truth. Listening blindly to them makes it too easy to get swindled. If one says that there is scientific proof behind their claims, insist on seeing this proof. Keep in mind that scientific experiements can be faulty if performed wrong...in other words, just because it's scientific doesn't mean it's free of snags with logic. And if the person refuses to show the proof, or ignores the question completely, especially when asked several times, it's a good bet that they are lying or do not really know as much as they would like you to think...which means that they may be relying on some research they know little to nothing about. And that is as foolish as foolish can get.

RAW! We can show you how to do this with a few hundred bucks worth of equipment and feed Buddy for around 15 or 20 cents per pound. I have also offered to buy some of the equipment for you. Good luck Budy, I will pray for you. It is obvious looking at all of your posts that this dog, like ours, is not able to handle the garbage put in commercial food. Many brands of commercial food also contain dead dogs and cats that have been put to sleep at a shelter and then sent to a rendering plant. The poison used to kill these former pets is not evaporated by the heat used in the process of turning these dead pets into dog food. Thus, you are killing your dog slowly with many brands of this garbage some call dog food. I will e-mail you in 3 days or less and show you how to make several hundred pounds of good, nutritious food for under $50 or so.

Mom recommends feeding a food with a protein source as the first ingredient, preferably a meat meal like chicken meal for example. Also check for foods that don't have ground yellow corn, chicken by-products(heads, feet, & intestines) artificial colors and preservitives. Mom also likes our food to have at least 3.5% linoleic acid for our skin and coat. For sensitive tummies mom recommends Nutro's Venison Meal & Whole Brown Rice formula. Venison is easy on the tummy-just be sure to switch over very slowly, at least over a week. If you are known to have tummy issues than two weeks may be preferable. Mom also recommends adding a little bit of organic yogurt or pumpkin....or both! We get them as treats! Mom freezes them in ice cube treys and than gives us one a day! We love them and the vet gave us the idea to help with digestion!
I hope Buddy gets better soon! Let us know what works! :D

Wow a lot of good answers, this is going to be a hard one to beat but here's my opinion, Blue Buffalo, Diamond and Canidae are all good and fair priced dog foods. Well except for Canidae which may be a little more expansive. Bands you should stay away from are
-Iams
-Pedigree
-Purina
-Science Diet (Not as bad as the three above)
-Eukanuba
-Kibbles & Bits
And the worst dog food brand of all time, the one sold at walmart;
-Ol Roy
This website plots the top ten worst dog foods.
