My dog trainer told me to get rid of my 3.5 yr old Jack Russell and to get a Lab, immediately. I'm working with an animal behaviorist now and learning a lot. The earlier trainer offers a money-back guarantee. Don't we deserve it?
I can't tell you what people in general would say to such a trainer, but I can tell you what I would say:
"If I had wanted a Lab, I would have gotten a Lab. As it is, I now own a Jack Russell Terrier and I've made a lifetime commitment to care for him and work with him. I do not see him as disposable.
As you've obviously no interest in helping me train my dog, I'm going to make use of the money-back guarantee in your contract, and I'll be asking for my money back. I expect the money back within (insert amount of days specified in the contract).
I will be taking this money to hire a trainer or behaviorist who is qualified to work with more than Labrador Retrievers and who will take the time to work with me and my dog, which is what I'm looking for. I'll also make sure not to recommend your services to anyone, unless they own a Lab, as you don't see to work with any other breeds.
Have a nice day."

I totally agree with what Abby said. Basically, you have a trainer who gives a bad name to trainers, everywhere.
If this trainer had any experience at all, they would have been able to help you and you shouldn't have had make the next step and go to a behaviorist.
I think this alone is reason for a money back guarantee to be honored, and don't even get me started on the lack of professionalism.
Hope you're having better luck with the behaviorist.

I'd have alot to say. But I'll keep that to myself. I really couldn't have said it any better then Abby did. You don't come to your trainer to put up with them telling you to get rid of your dog and get a specific breed, you come to them to get opinions and guidance on training. A "Trainer".
Hope everything is going well with the behaviorist.

Many trainers want to train Labs because Labs, retrievers and the sporting and working breeds are easy. I have a friend that trains Australian Cattle Dogs... some of the most anti-people and difficult dogs to train because they have Dingo bred into them. Your dog is most likely a typical Terrier, excitable and with a brain for one thing, THE HUNT! Agility is fun for terriers and they can excell at it. Dump the old trainer like Abby said, and find one that will help you teach your dog some fun and exciting tricks... you know terriers are nearly rabid for those underground tracking trials... which for the moment the name has eluded me, where they go to ground in a controlled manner after some prey. No one gets hurt, unless it's the man on top of the caged rabbit who gets knocked off by the very enthusiastic Jack! AKC has info on it, name is just eluding me!

I'd have a lot to say, but Abby said it nicer. Definitely get your money back and I'd also look into reporting him to the agency who accredited him. I think they should know what type of trainer they've accredited.

With apologies to the poster, who already got good answers, I need to say something, even though this is not a forum. Luka - ACDs are not anti people. A litle stubborn and hard headed sometimes, but extremely loyal, loving animals. There are exceptions, of course, but there are in every breed.
to the poster - Jack Russells are great dogs and the advice already given is good.

I've got to agree with the other posters. Get your money back and get a trainer that will work with the dog you have, not the dog that they want to work with.

First off I have to say Pokey is just adorable, I know that doesn't change the fact he's a handful but what a face. I would ask for my money back from the first trainer, especially if he/she offers a money-back guarantee, obviously the results were far from satisfactory. It's hard to believe a professional would say such a thing to you and Kudo's to you for moving on to a behaviorist and not giving up on this precious pup.

it is possible that the trainer don't like small dogs. sence your dog is 3.5 years old, keep it. listen to your heart not to the mind of others. if it was me, i wouldn't listen to him. he has no right to tell you wich dog you should or shouldn't have.if you are not satisfy with the trainer, i think you derserve your many back when the contract says so.
