What do you do when you are depressed because your dog isn't the breed that you wanted? (PLEASE ANSWER IF YOU SEE THIS!)

What do you do when you got a dog mainly because he was a certain breed or breed mix, but later find out that he wasn't what you thought he was. It shouldn't matter since he fits your lifestyle perfectly, but it keeps bothering you that he isn't the breed you wanted. And you had your heart set on getting the breed and are very disappointed that he didn't have that breed in him. You know that it shouldn't matter, but you just wanted that breed SO much...What do you do?

TROUBLE

I'm sorry to be so blunt but why are you being so shallow? You say you love your dog and it fits your lifestyle but you are upset because as a mixed breed it doesn't have the "breed you wanted" in him? First off what is the breed you wanted and how do you know? More important is how you could think that way. If your love is based on what the breed is and not the dog than you probably aren't ready to have a dog. Your dog will cause resentment in you and the way you treat him can change. Why don't you find a home that will love him for whom he is not WHAT he is and get a fish so that you don't hurt any other dog. Dogs are COMPANIONS not possessions. You sound like you may be quite young and if this is true than it's understandable you react this way. Immaturity makes you deal differently. This dog is a life not a toy. If you had a child and it had brown eyes instead of the blue eyes "you really wanted" would you feel differently toward it? So why to a dog? Love the dog regardless!!!!!

First of all, think of it from his point of view. He is there fur you. Now he can sense that you are sad. How is that fair to him? Just an idea.

deal with it... if you love your dog why does it even matter what breed he is???

I guess I'd try to figure out what it exactly was about that breed that you wanted so bad. Was it a temperament that you wanted, a particular look, an ability....what exactly? And then I'd remember that no matter even if I got a pure bred dog that none of those things were actually a guarantee so it would have been a sort of crap shoot anyway. So that would make me realize just how much I love the dog that I have for the things that are great about him.

I think I understand what you mean. I don't really know what to tell you... I know it can be really hard to let go of something you really wanted, but sometimes you have to realize that what you have might really be what you needed. I guess you should spend time with the dog, bond with him, and try to realize how much you really love him. Eventually, you should feel better about it. I know for me, big disappointments eventually seem to "fade" and not seem quite so important after time passes.
Sorry I couldn't help more!

HAYLEE

WELL THINK ABOUT IT THIS WAY.
IF YOU WOULDNT HAVE GOTTEN HIM, WOULD HE HAVE FOUND A GOOD HOME???
IF HE MEANS EVERYTHING TOO YOU, AND YOU WOULD DO ANYTHING FOR HIM, THEN HE IS THE RIGHT DOG/COMPANION FOR YOU.
MY 2 CHIHUAHUAS ARE MY LIFE!!! NEVER THOUGHT I COULD LOVE SOMETHING SO SMALL AS MUCH AS I DO. HAYLEE MY YOUNGEST MAY NOT BE A PURE BRED CHIHUAHUA AS FIRST THOUGHT, BUT I STILL LOVE HER THE SAME. I KNEW THAT I WAS GOING TO BE HER MOMMIE FUREVER WHEN I FOUND OUT SHE HAD PARVO AND THE DR TOLD ME SHE WOULDNT MAKE IT. IT DIDNT MATTER THAT HER EARS DONT STAND UP,OR SHE DOESNT LOOK LIKE A CHIHUAHUA. SHE LOVES ME AND IS VERY HAPPY I RESCUED HER AND SAVED HER LIFE.

i think that the dog will grow on you if you give him a chance, which you should, and soon it wont even matter. i dont want to be mean but how would you feel if you were rejected by a guy/girl (i dont know your gender) because you werent what you wanted, but you felt loved by them!

Frosti

You really shouldnt care. I know that it might be hard but it is not your dogs fault that he is what he is, he didnt get to pick how he looked and if his personality is good that is all that should matter. Think about it, you could have gotten the breed that you wanted and it could have been terrible. The dog could have bit you and ran away and done a whole bunch of other terrible things- but he looked good. Looks are way less important then your dogs personality and you just have to look past the outside and at the inside, your dog loves YOU dont matter how you look and if you cant appreciate that maybe you dont deserve Snoopy... Just imagine if you were born and your parents started to hate you because your eyes and hair were the wrong color, they didnt say anything but you could tell they hated you for it, that is what it is like for your dog, they can sense that. You have 2 options
1.keep your dog and look beyond his imperfect looks
2. Get a new dog and get rid of Snoopy.

Kobe

Unless you have a purebred with papers, you might never know what is in a mixed breed. I wouldnt worry being maybe your dog does have the breed in him your thinking and you dont know it.

Miss Buddie

I think we sometimes get it stuck in our heads what we want and can't let go of it. When we went looking for another dog after our beloved Sting died, I never would have imagined that me, the perennial chi mom, would end up with an ACD mix. I was told that she was going to be more like her terrier mom and be really small. Guess what? Neither of those things have turned out to be true. Buddie's all ACD and probably going to be about 30 pounds full grown. (To a chi mom, that's HUGE! BOL).

Anyway, Miss Buddie is nothing like I would have planned but she's such an incredible blessing in ways I never would have imagined. She's fun and active and you never know what adventures she's going to take you on in any given day.

Sometimes instead of giving us what we want, God gives us (and our animals) what we need.

Maybe you aren't the person that he wanted. Maybe he likes you and all. But maybe he had his heart set on a person that wouldn't care what breed he was.

Brenda the Lion

I dont get it. I am very interested in knowing what breeds my Brenda is but that doesnt keep me awake at night, I see her face and I dont think of breeds I think of her. When we were thinking of getting a third dog a Yorkie was my #1 choice but there is not one single day that I regret getting Kirstie , my yellow lab instead. You love what you have and if you dont you will be very sad and always expecting something else in life. Iam sure your dog is unique and if someone abused and sold you a different breed, you should be upset with the person and not with the dog you ended up getting. The first dog I rescued from the streets was old and not very attractive by general opinion but I would love to have him still with me. You have to love what life gives you.

Dozer

If you still want that certain breed, maybe you could get a second dog? I would just love your dog for who he/she is and make the best out of him.

Oski

try your absolute hardest to look past the breed and think of him as any old dog who just wants to love you and be loved by you! after time will you think that you were crazy for caring about that and just be totally obsessed with him! just remember that one of these days you can get the breed you really want! but right now just try to be happy with who you got. good luck!
