I have a male and female Labrador that I would really like to switch to a premium, meat-based food. Right now they, and our other dogs are fed Riverbend(from out local co-op). I would be paying for it myself, and being a junior it couldn't be too expensive. I'd just like my dogs to be as healthy as possible and give them the best nutrtion I can AFFORD. Thanks!
If you have a costco near by Kirkland dog food is actually really very good and the price is awesome. Diamond naturals, Premium edge are all good foods on a tight budget. Heathwise, Chicken soup for dog lovers soul, Canidae, California Naturals, Natures, Variety Prarie, Natural Balance. These are all very good yet very well priced kibble. Hope this helps.

Well it's hard to get a super healthy dog food cheap.
I would reccomend reading the ingrediants.
You don't wait Chicken-by-products as the first ingrediant or Rice, or any time of grain. Fat, but not too much fatt.

Give Canidae or chicken soup for the dog lovers soil a try. Both are affordable and meat based. You could also try Kirkland.

Iams is the food of choice for service dogs. Several schools use it including the assistance dog school we are raising our third puppy for. I can assure you the teams of professionals at the schools have far more resources in choosing a food than looking at what ingredients they find appealing. Unlike the members here, they have data on how dogs do on different diets. Unfortunately, they don't share their information on how they chose. They only tell those who care for their dogs, what to feed.
I am buying 30 pound bags of Iams at Wal-Mart for $25. It is highly possible the Riverbend is already providing as good of a diet as anything. Look for AAFCO tested on the bag. If it has corn as the first ingredient, it isn't as concentrated as other chows, but may provide the same nutrition. You will need to feed more had have larger, softer stools to clean up, but the dogs will be just as healthy. Most labs would enjoy the larger amounts you have to feed.

You might also want to look into Cloud Star (cloudstar.com) for some good, oven baked dog food. I have 5 dogs and feed them that, its not as expensive as a lot of other premiums and its oven baked instead of extruded and layered with fat spray, like a lot of other foods. Plus the shipping is free (at least when I buy it, but I buy 80 pounds at a time). Good luck, most premium brands are going to be more expensive. Nothing bought at the supermarket is considered premium nor is a good food to feed your dogs, unless you want to feed them "sawdust."

No Iams!!!
I would recomend Innova or Natural Life. They are both resonably priced.
Natural Life is a 3 star brand but it is easily digestable and the first product is lamb.

We've just switched to Diamond Naturals and we love it. My mommy buys it from the feed store for $25 and it lasts all 3 of us a whole month! Chicken and Rice is my favourite!

Labs are the best.
When you think of GOOD food for your dog you should first consider quality. No fillers or To many grains. You want some thing that contains Chicken, beef, you know meaty things. and you want some white rice for there digestive track. Just becareful for too many grains or corn. NO CORN. ...............................PEDIGREE ADULT is a good wholsome quality food. Not Expensive either. Ushally $10 a big bag at Dollar General. Also Try Kibbles and bits its got tender meaty nuggets fully loaded with the meaty flaver dogs LOVE! Hope i helped . Give your pooch a smooch for me

If you are looking for a food that is both decent and affordable, you really cannot go wrong with choosing Costco's Kirkland brand. I think that is a really underrated brand of food, especially considering that it is leagues above foods like Iams and Beneful that you can get at your local grocery store, and much cheaper to boot.
Some pepople would have you believe that there are no reasons to choose a quality food that contains ingredients such as meats over ingredients such as corn and other cheap fillers. Problem: Dogs are CARNIVORES. Their entire digestive system and teeth are designed to tear, eat, and digest meats. Feeding a food that does not have meats as its primary ingredients just makes no sense.
Most Service Dog organizations, by the way, don't feed the foods they do because they have some sort of secret access to knowledge about them. They feed them because they are DONATED to them by those companies!

I am going to second Diamond Naturals. It is a good food and it runs about $30 for a 40 lb bag.
Definately stay away from Iams, Science Diet, Eukanuba, Nutro, or any grocery store brand kibbles (purina, pedigree, etc). These foods claim to be good, but at a closer look they contain awful ingredient. With these foods you are paying big money for a brand and a whole bunch of corn.

I agree with the Diamond Naturals. We feed out 7 dogs this brand, it only costs $20.99 for an 18 pound bag and it contains no wheat or corn.

I used Iams for years and it wasn't until we lost our last dog, Buddy, to cancer (very suddenly) that we decided to look for something all natural as we found out commercial dog food regulations are so low that you can't trust that your pets health is the first priority. Sad...very sad.
We found a great all natural dog food made by a holistic vet. But, it is only available online. Its not sold commercially, but only through independent distributors. I won't feed our dogs anything else ......EVER AGAIN. I believe this food is safe b/c its never had a recall. As you may remember Blue Diamond, Buffalo and Nutro were on the 2007 recall list.
For us.....if its sold at the store......we're not buying it!
If you'd like more info on this food....send me a message. Would love to help!

Diamond is a very good dog food at a reasonable price. I highly recommend you choose that one if money is an issue. It's not as good as Innova but not nearly as bad as Purina. Talk to a pet shop or a vet about Diamond.
