We're leaving our dog with a friend for about 6 days, and I need to know what kind of dog food to get. I already know about IAMS, and why they're bad and all, but I need some other brands to tell my friend what to get and not to get so that he doesn't get Harry sick or anything. If it helps, Harry is a Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Paw-leeze help me!!!! P.S- I need the info before March 27th 09.

I'm not quite sure what you are asking. If you're asking whether Harry should be given a special food while you're away, then the answer is no. You should provide the friends who are watching him with a supply of his regular food or ask them to purchase that for him and reimburse him.

Perhaps you don't feed Harry commercial food and you feed raw or a cooked diet. If that's the case, then you can freeze food for him and have them feed him that.

Any diet change is going to greatly upset his tummy unless it's done gradually so sticking to what he already eats is the best case scenario. If he must have a different food, start weaning him over the week before you go away and keep him on it a week or two after you come back.

If you're looking for food recommendations, I highly recommend Wellness brand, and feeding a ratio of 60/40 wet and dry formulas.

Good luck, he's quite a cutie!

What are you feeding him now?...Unless you are going to switch immediately so he has a chance to transition to the new food before he goes with your friend...Otherwise keep him on it so your friend doesn't have to deal with any possible tummy upset because of the abrupt change.

I would stick with your current dog food. If you must change dog food I would recommend IAMS or Science diet(expensive though good for your dog.) If you change dog foods, you should start a week or two ahead of time. I recommend The first 3 days use a mix of 3/4 of first food and 1/4 new food. Then next 3 days use 1/2 old and 1/2 new. Then for 3 more days 1/4old and 3/4 new. Then you have gradually changed the dog from the old food to the new food. The dog should not get sick from this gradual change in food. If you want to learn more about how to change your dogs food without them getting sick go to the following website they don't tell you change your dogs food over like I do but it is very similar.www.iams.com If you have any more questions I would go to an IAMS or Science Diet website. What ever food you choose I would go to there website and see what they say. Also there are comparison tables on some websites that you compare with.
