We live in the mountains so we don't give our dog heart worm pills. However, we are going to the coast on Monday.

Do we need to give him the heart worm pill before we go or can he be given it when we get back? We will be gone 5 days.

Umm, most of California has heartworm problems including the Lake Tahoe area. Yuba, Nevada, and Placer counties all report heartworms. Nevada also has heartworm problems near the border.

Are you sure your dog hasn't been exposed? Where did you get the heartworm pills, most vets demand a test before they will provide the pills. Ask the vet when you should give the preventive.

If you got the pills from a friend or someone, talk to a vet before giving them to your dog. Some of the types of heartworm pills can kill a dog that is heartworm positive.

Heartworm pills don't prevent heartworm. They only kill off the existing ones. By treating the dog every month, you kill off any ones it picked up in the last month before they are big enough to do any harm. So as long as you are sure your dog doesn't have heartworms, wait until you get back to give the pill.

If you have mosquitos, you have heartworm disease. How high and dry are those mountains? A topical like Advantage-multi or Revolution might make more sense than a pill to prevent heart worm infection.

And the pills do prevent the disease by killing off the immature parasite as it enters the body. The topicals also repel the mosquitos in some cases. These products may be purchased at a Vetranarians office.
