We have a 5 year male husky shepherd mix and want to get a female companion dog. Our dog doesn't seem interested.

We go to the dog park and our dog would rather be with us than play with other dogs for the most part. I have had the female neighbor dog who is the same size over to play with him and he might run around for 10-15 seconds and then he goes off by himself or comes by me. He is very attached to us and we are his "pack". He loves to wrestle with my husband. Do you think he would learn to love another dog and like the companionshp?

I REALLY want to rescue another dog from the shelter and give her a good home. We have lots of space in our home and back yard and I only work 20 hours so I spend lots of time with my dog and two cats.

Would I be better off getting a small dog which is what I would desire to fit MY needs.

Thanks for your time and thought.

Yes, I do think it's possible for him to warm up to a new dog. But honestly, you really won't know until you try. Can the neighbor dog spend a day at your house, just to see how he handles it? Even if he isn't perfect at first, he will get better with time.

It is much better if he is simply ignoring the other dog than if he is acting aggressive towards it.

One thing you will want to prevent is any sort of jealousy issues when it comes to him having to "share" you and your husband with another dog. But hey, that's what you have two hands for!!

From your description, it sounds like he would be a lovely mellow companion for another dog. Look at mature adult dogs if he is not that interested in playing.

Thank you for looking to rescue!
