I posted this on the Grooming forum and haven't gotten many responses.
I have always wanted to work with animals in some way and so i am looking into the grooming field. I am wanting to start this in the first of the year. I am looking into some distance schooling and will starting out part time until i get the hang of it. I will eventually make this my career and will open my own salon.
Basically i am looking for some advice on how to get started. Also any recommendations on schooling will be great. I know this isn't the easiest field of work but i believe i can handle it i am just wanting some input from my peers along with the research i am doing.
Well i don't have any recommendations for schooling, but i could try and help out with some ideas on how to get started. Are you planning on opening up an actual store for people to take their pets to, like a hair salon. or are you planning on having one of those portable Dog Grooming businesses?

I see that you are from ohio I found lots of great schools in the Ohio area www.propetgroomer.com
This link will show you a list of pet grooming schools in that area. Schools are great as you get alot of hands on practice that will also help in building your confidence. I went to school and have been grooming for almost 8 years now. Another way is to see if you can apprentice for a groomer. Also one way alot of people become a bather. Bathers usually bath, brush do some nail trimmings and sometimes blow dries. This gets you in somewhere and allows you to watch and learn. Youd be surprised how much you will learn this way. Also as a bather you can get promoted to a groomer eventually when they see you are experienced enough. If you have a pet smart or petco you can always go to school through them and work for them gaining experience. Hope this helps get you in the right direction. Good luck. :D
