This is done in steps and could take some time. Get your dog to sit and wait a few seconds then give a treat and praise. Keep doing this and increase the sit time little by little and introduce the command "Stay." The more you practice the "stay" command, the longer your dog should be able to stay. Slowly back up little by little to make sure he will stay even if you move away. Pretty soon you should be able to walk away or turn your back and your dog will still be sitting there.

The method I use has been used on 2 of my border collies. I have them on my left side and I swing my hand to the front of their face and say STAY. I walk in front of them and then go back to my original place and tell them GOOD DOG and give them the treat. My training classes have trained this way and thats the method I use.
