My dog scratches his ears, but not all the time. We he does start to scratch them he doesn't stop, he'll keep stratching until they bleed. He always has gunk in his ears when I clean them out. I don't know if it's wax or what. It dark and sticky and it comes out in a big glob. Everytime the vet looks in his ears, he says they're fine. Does he just have a case of over waxy ears? Or is it something else? When he was a puppy he had a yeast infection in his ears and they gave me medicine for it. And the vet gave me some ear cleanser to clean his ears out, but they're still yucky when I clean them out.
My dog has gotten itchy ears in old age due to allergies that produce excess wax. Two things, fish oil capsules from the vet definately helped, make sure you do the proper dosing and regulary cleaning out the ears. My vet gave me cleaner (breaks up wax) then I clean out with cotton swabs and balls, then I put a small amount of antibacterial gel which also helps stop the itch. Ask your vet to clean your dogs ears for you so you can see the technique and it will also give your vet a better look at the wax . My dog's wax is abundant but not a big glob and not overly sticky so something might be going on there. Good Luck!!

If it's dark and stinky it is likely a bacterial or yeast infection. Ear mites are quite uncommon in dogs.
I would check with the vet again, and have them checked before you clean the gunk out. Sometimes a culture is necessary to find the cause of the problem.

I'm not sure what it is. I does seem like it's the ear wax that's doing the trick. When you clean his ears does he stop scratching or keeps going? Have you told your vet what he has been doing(lots of scratching) even though Im sure you have. I have no idea. Maybe feas? I'm not sure, im just giving slight ideas. I wish I could help more! Hope Iggy's ears recover!
From your good dog,Enzo
P.S. Thank-you for you comment on my question it gave me an idea.

For some reason mine has always had black gunky ears and it is their wax.
Same thing vet says he had slight yeast on his face and some in his ears. I just clean them out once a month with a cotton ball and solid gold's ear cleaner then I wipe them out with a damp not wet clean wash cloth.
If I have to I just take a quetip and clean only the outside skin in the folds, never stick one down the ear at all.
Also, do not let the dog swim in any lake or creek. It is enough to make them really sick. And the fact they can not swim very good.
I just cleaned my dog's ears yesterday they were yucky as usual.
