He is still with his mom but his litter mates are all rehomed. He was sick for a couple days and is starting to get his strength/energy back. I'd like to start getting him accustomed to the unknown a soon as possible without causing him undue stress. So for I've noticed he tends to shy away at first and then will go towards the item/person who startled him, he tends to be overly interested in being right up my butt, so to speak, when I'm over at their house. Both his parents and his grand-dam on his mother's side are very people friendly so where do I start? I want to make sure he doesn't turn out poorly.
Start out by making sure he is properly vaccinated and dewormed. From there play with him and get him used to you so he isn't scared of you. Try doing some training like sit and stay with treats and toys.
Puppies learn fast. But, he shouldn't go out for socialization until all his shots have been given.

Cadillac is right on. Your puppy needs to have his immunizations before socializing with random dogs and areas that dogs frequent, but you can begin the basics of obedience and leash training (it may be a little early for potty training).
He actually sounds quite well adjusted since he's willing to approach something that previously startled him. If he seems reluctant to investigate something new, don't force the issue - he's still quite young. Good luck!
