Sparky

Snapping Lab mix

Sparky is a 1 year old lab mix. He won't calm down and I walk him every day and play fetch in the backyard with him every night. He still won't calm down. If I try to dicipline him, he will just snap at me and think I am playing. He sometimes will bite me and I want this to stop. Sometimes I even get out a belt or something BUT I DON'T ACTUALLY WHIP HIM WITH IT. It's just the only way for him to calm down and it dosen't look good to the people who come to our house. Any thoughts or advice?
Thanks.

Sabrina ;)

Just put your self in his place for a moment.....how cranky and frightened would you be if someone threatened you with a belt....
If you don't know how to train the dog, go to class and learn.
If you think he "knows" what to do, he doesn't. Your abuse will not help. It is normal for Labs (field variety) to be high energy for 3 years if not their whole lives.
The movie and book "Marley And Me" is about such a Lab.
My sisters Lab Cricket is as hyper as they get. So I leash her and sit her. After only one week with me she knows to behave differently around me. She continues to be an idiot with her family. If you change the dog can too.

AND USE YOUR BELT TO HOLD UP YOUR PANTS - NOTHING ELSE!

If your dog has never been hit with a belt then he wouldn't equate you having it with being disciplined anyway so what god does that do you?
Get into some training classes with someone who knows what they are doing & put the tools of abuse away!

Train your dog, don’t threaten him. Dogs don’t have the kind of reasoning that people do, so if you hold the belt the dog will just see you holding a belt. If you have hit the dog in the past with a belt, you dog will see you threatening to hurt him but won’t know why other than that is what you do. The second scenario will make your dog fear you but won’t affect your training.
You desperately need to learn about training animals. The most important thing to remember is that you have 3 to 5 seconds to correct a behavior and have the dog understand what he is being corrected for. If you wait longer, the dog will think he is being corrected for what he just did. For instance, if your dog is acting crazy and you call him to you to correct, he will think he is being corrected for coming to you, not for what he did just before.
Go to a class; get a book, and good luck.

You need a dog training class. Sparky is still just a puppy-that is why he is excited and happy! He is wanting to have fun and play...thats what puppies do! Even though he is pretty much full grown he will still demonstrate puppy behavior and attitudes up until he is three and than will still have random outbursts of playful puppy behavior! He is a lab-they are working dogs that have lots of energy! When you walk him make sure you are not stopping and letting him sniff and lead you-do so for at least 30 min.each day. After you walk him than play fetch and all of the fun stuff. Don't use a belt-or threaten with a belt. Use a deep and stern voice instead.

Good luck! Your local petcos and petsmarts have dog training classes!
