We adopted Maggey...Riley was here first. She is very put out that another dog is in the house...I wonder if I made a mistake thinking we could do this. I've hired a trainer, however he doesnt start until next Monday. Maggey is a great dog. She hasnt ruined anything...no accidents in the house...she is happy! I put her in her crate today and she freaked out! I didnt want to have to crate Riley, but I wonder if I crate them both...in separate crates...but in the same room, if Maggey will be more calm. Riley will probably be really angry that she has to back in her crate. She has not used a crate in months!
Any suggestions?
I would NOT put her back in her crate. She's the "first" dog and has the "right" to be out of her crate at night if that it the way she's been sleeping up ntil this point.
I don't really think that Riley being in or out of a crate will have any bearing on whether or not Maggey wants to be in her crate. She may just not like the crate, which is more normal that you might think.
Hang in there until Monday and take a deep breath. It will all work out okay, but you will have to have patience and keep looking forward to when things are better.

Can you put the crates in the same room at an angle so they see each other if the crates are the plastic ones and then not close Riley's door? That way she can come and go as she wishes and she may surprise you and want to be within sight of Maggey. When I dog sit a dog that needs to be crated, I will crate my dog and the visitor for errands, but not crate my dog at night. My dog never minded being crated for errands as long as the crates are at an angle so they can see each other, not side by side.

I would not put your original dog in a crate. You could create problems with your original dog if the new dog has issues in the crate and screams the whole time that you are gone. If you have a video camera that you can leave running to see what the true behavior of the new dog is it would probably help you decide how to work things out. If you are not able to handle this individual dog then you should consider taking the dog back to whereever you got it. It would not be doing the dog a great deal of misfortion by doing so.As a matter of fact there ma be someone more equipt to handle the dog then yourself. She may need a family with no other animals or dogs. don't feel bad if you are not able to help. There maybe another dog that fits more into your situation.Trust me I do not tell many people this but I do understand as someone that has done behavior/training for over 20 years. You may be able to save another dog while this one goes to the right person. Good Luck!!!
