My puppy's vet is recommending a product called Sentinel for flea & tick protection. She says this also protects against heartworms and other parasites. I've heard of using frontline & Advantage but never heard of Sentinel. Does anyone else have any experience with this? I live in Alabama and my vet is recommending year round protection. Thx!
Please don't use pesticides on your dog!
With my experience with Frontline, Advantage and K-9 Advantix, none seem to work very well.
Try adding apple cider vinegar to his water, that prevents fleas. I've used it on my dog in Texas and while our neighbors, who use Frontline, had a year round infestation, my dog only had 1-2 fleas!
Paw mail me if you have any questions!

Sentinel is probably the most potentially harmful of the topical flea meds and hopefully your vet also informed you that in order to prescribe this medication, your dog needs a physical and a bloodtest, first. That should tell you right there how strong of a medication it is!
I didn't want to put Jack on any kind of topical flea medication either, but during summertime, I found it necessary to do so as he has a flea allergy and flea combing, vaccuuming and bedding washing didn't eliminate 100% of the fleas during the high season, though it came close. I'd recommend trying these things in tandem before resorting to flea meds.
If you have to have one, Advantage seems to be the one that, at least in our area, is the most effective. Flea generations are becoming immune to Frontline and it is losing it's efficacy in many areas of the country.
Also, you don't have to use ALL of the doseage. I only use Advnatage lightly during summer and that's enough.
