Can you help me???

I have a 10 month, 80lb, fixed female rott. She is the sweetest dog I have ever had. She stays by my side all the time and sits on my lap (half way) at night on the couch. We sleep together and she is great with all my grand kids and my other dogs.
Here's the problem. I CAN NOT WALK HER. She pulls me so bad and I am beginning to get scared she is going to pull me down. If I fall and get hurt, I cant work. I am 57. I try to walk her everyday, but today, I had to stop. She saw a squirrel and she went off and I almost lost my balance. I love this dog and I know she needs exercise, but she is getting worst. We have a large fenced yard, but she wont play outside unless I am outside with her. Yes, I know she is spoiled, but she deserves spoiling the rest of the time.
What do I need to do to make this better?

ASKED BY

Walks very fast on walks, how to get him to slow down a step?

Whenever we are on walks, Desmond walks at a very fast pace, and I have to almost jog to keep up with him, and it's kind of a pain.

He doesn't pull on the leash and is generally very well behaved when we are on walks otherwise; the leash is always slack and he is very polite, never lunges or anything.

He knows "walk nice", which is essentially him walking next to me at the pace I'm at, but every time I say "very good! thank you!", he thinks I'm "releasing" him from the walk nice, and speeds right back up. I don't ever use those words to release him from any of his other tricks, though, only for praise . Whenever he gets ahead of me, I say "nuh-uh" and I have him stop until I catch up and praise him when he gets in the right position, but again he only speeds up.

Is there anything I can do to keep him at a more comfortable pace for me consistently during walks?

ASKED BY

How do I get my dog to walk politely on a loose leash?

Just wondering other people's thoughts on training their dogs to walk nicely on a leash. Our 8 month old beagle/cattle dog has never been leash trained. He (obviously due to the hound breed) is very smell driven. We have started obedience school this past weekend, but haven't touched too much on polite walking. The instructor recommended that we have him wear a gentle leader harness (at this point we are still trying to get him used to wearing it as he tries to pull it off). When attempting to walk him, Moses will pull, jump/nip and also chew or play tug of war with his leash. We recognize how important exercise and/or walks are for him, but we can't get very far with his current behaviors. Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you. :-)

ASKED BY

Having problems getting our girl to walk...

So our girl is just over 7 months and I understand she's a pup still, but I'm just looking for some tips on how to get her to walk and not pull me. She's a lab/bernese mix and weighs in (currently) at 54lbs. Since we got her (8 wks old) I've been working with her on walking; I've tried stopping each time she pulls, holding the leash tightly so she can't pull, using a single word as a reference and getting her to come back to me and wait for slack on the leash before we restart. But I'm just wondering what else I can do to help her out. Right now I'm using a halter and it was working but now she's starting to pull again. Any tips are appreciated...I'm a first time dog owner so it's all new to me. :) I understand she's a puppy and it takes time, I'm just wonderng if anyone has any suggestions to try. Thanks

ASKED BY

How do you create calmness with shelter dogs?

I have many years of experience as a dog owner. However, I have just started volunteering at a local shelter. I walk dogs, greet potential adopters, etc. When trying to walk a shelter dog, how on earth do I get them to calm down enough to walk peacefully? I love walking with big dogs but I barely weigh 115 pounds. I can't physically control a dog with a lot of strength. I had 2 Rottweilers for 12 years...but I had them from puppies and they were trained when they were small. So I could handle them. Any suggestions?

ASKED BY
