Wanting advice on becoming a groomer

I posted this on the Grooming forum and haven't gotten many responses.
I have always wanted to work with animals in some way and so i am looking into the grooming field. I am wanting to start this in the first of the year. I am looking into some distance schooling and will starting out part time until i get the hang of it. I will eventually make this my career and will open my own salon.
Basically i am looking for some advice on how to get started. Also any recommendations on schooling will be great. I know this isn't the easiest field of work but i believe i can handle it i am just wanting some input from my peers along with the research i am doing.

ASKED BY

One school of thought states that since the shepherd's coat is so THICK , trimming it to make it shorter is just counter-productive. Anyone had any positive experiences with this? Do we really know if the dog is more comfortable and likes it?

ASKED BY

Thought This Was Cute...
After working at a grooming shop and hearing "WHY does it cost SO much?!"

10 reasons your dog's haircut costs more than yours! :) Enjoy!

10. Your hairdresser doesn't wash and clean your rear end.

9. You don't go for 8 weeks without washing or brushing your hair.

8. Your hairdresser doesn't have to give you a sanitary trim.

7. Your hairdresser doesn't have to clean your ears.

6. Your hairdresser doesn't have to clean boogies from your eyes.

5. You sit still for your hairdresser.

4. Your haircut doesn't include a manicure or pedicure.

3. Your hairdresser only washes and cuts the hair on your head.

2. You don't bite or scratch your hairdresser. (I hope not anyway).

And the Number 1 reason your dog's haircut costs more than yours....

1. The likelihood of you pooping or peeing while your hair is being cut is
extremely slim.

I've been told NOT to cut hair short but I see it done all the time. I've read that they have a double coat: a soft "down" layer under the long hair "overcoat". This down layer protects them from heat and cold. We need an expert opinion.

ASKED BY

How much fur should I leave on Jasper when I get his hair cut?

I love having fur on him, and I know it keeps them warm/cold depending on the weather but I also don't want to have him get all knotted.
He is a yorkie/maltese cross and I brush him every day (or every second day) and I've noticed recently he is still getting very matted so I wanted to cut his hair just to a length where it wont get as matted as fast.
Any suggestions?

ASKED BY
