Our backyard isn't fenced in so we have our girl on a 20' leash while she's outside, she's mastered the sit and wait for me to say 'ok' for her to leave the door way when she comes in; but now I'm trying to work on a new command and it's just not getting across. I check her paw to know if she's wet or not when she comes in and I've been associating touching her paw with the command 'paw'. But it's not connecting...any tips? Again I'm a first time dog owner so I know there's more that I could be doing to help her learn I just don't know what that is. I've tried holding a treat while doing it too and she just focuses on the treat and wont do anything else. Any tips are appreciated.

ASKED BY

How can my mom get me to drop toys?

I'm a stubborn Newf who loves to steal toys at the dog park. My mom tries to get me to drop them but I love to hang on to them with all my slobbery might. It's fine and dandy ... until the original owner wants it back.

I'm not food driven at all; she's tried trading me biljacs, cheese ... even dried liver treats! But I want nothing to do with them. I'll even turn down tug, my favorite game, if it means I get to keep the stolen toy.

So, *she's* looking for suggestion, even though *I* don't mind if you don't give any ... ;-)

ASKED BY

Feeling rebellious, ignoring commands.

I'm back with yet another question about my puppy, Ava. Seems she's hit a rebel phase, and she wont listen to commands that she was previously very obedient with. I've been trying my hardest to teach her it is NOT ok to ignore me.

When she ignores I usually put my hand on her butt and force her to sit. Sometimes I'll pop the leash to get her attention. She usually (reluctantly) obeys after I do this, but I think she's starting to lose trust in me. I don't like being rough with her.

My question is, should I praise her even after I've had to force her to sit, or will praising for a forced sit only make her think it's ok to ignore me?

And do you have any other tips for teaching her it's not ok to ignore me?

Thanks for your answers!

ASKED BY

If your dog knows a certain command (like sit), but refuses to do it when you ask for it (even with a high value treat), do you give the command once and wait for the behavior (within in a reasonable timeframe) or do you continue to repeat the command and force him to do the behavior (like push down his butt)?
Training my dog to bark on command?

JoJo is very smart and learns very quickly. Everything that he knows I taught him with my own(gentle and loving) ways. He can sit, stay, lay, bow, dance, roll over, and shake. But the one thing I don't know where to begin with is on how to teach him to speak/bark on command. He is not a barker as most poms are known for. If we're playing in the front he'll bark every now and then to someone who is walking by, but not all the time. (except to a boxer/pit mix named Bear, that lives across the street, they do not like eachother for some reason! That is the first time he has ever acted that way with a dog, he is always good toward other dogs, he is very well socialized, but once JoJo sees him they want to attack eachother! But we wouldn't be having this problem if the PASTOR had him leashed or in his yard, he just lets him roam the streets) Anywho, how can you train your dog to bark/speak on command if he is not a barker? Can it be done? lol

ASKED BY
