My boyfriend and i are looking to adopt another male bulldog and we have a male pit mix now...i have read and researched and i know there can sometimes be some aggression between males of the same sex and similar breeds. Our current dog, joe, has never really displayed much aggression towards other dogs, just jumping and playfullness, i have seen him growl once at another dog, but i know he was stressed and overwhelmed and he had 2 dogs sniffing at him and jumping all around and being crazy, so im pretty sure it was more of a "just get outta my face for a second" kind of thing....anyone have any experiences with this? If it comes to it and is safer, we dont have any problems with getting a female...thanks for your help!!

ASKED BY

I'm afraid that if I get another dog from a shelter that Leila (female) will get over protective of the new dog, and may become possesive of the new dog. This happened with my friends dog, and when they go to the dog park she has attacked 2-4 other dog's in protection even though the other dog's where just sniffing. I know having another dog would be great I just don't want Leila to turn into a possesive dog. She's very UN-dominant, she'll submit REALLY quickly. I would want to adopt another dog that submit's quickly aswell. What do you think? Thanks :)

ASKED BY

Will another dog help ease the transition?

We have a 7 yr old dog, Lucky that was just diagnosed with a mast cell tumor on his leg. We are hopeful but the chances of surviving a year are slim. We have a cat that he gets along with really well but they are separated during the day. They play and the cat is pretty mellow, has never hissed once at anyone. We wanted to get another dog for him as a companion when he feels bad and so he can teach the other dog how to fit into our family. Lucky is very smart and loving and we feel he could teach the new dog lots of great things. We both work full time so they would keep each other company during the day and we have a huge backyard they can play in when they want. We are a very loving family and I am currently 5 mos pregnant with our first baby. We thought maybe a companion would help ease the transition for Lucky and the baby as well as provide companionship for him as well. Thoughts?

ASKED BY

When i first talked to my neighbor she said i should just pick her up and put her back in the yard with her other 2 dogs. I tried the first day and she yelped like i hurt her. I brought her into my home to calm her down, picked her up and put her in her yard. Next day she was out again and i confronted her and she ran up with wagging tail til she got close. Her tail was between her legs and she looked scared but wanted to be close. She ran right into my house when i opened the door. She's been in my home ever since with small signs of being scared. I don't know if she has been abused but i want to give her to her owners but am scared it's a bad idea. i've been told i should talk to a legal rep and have them take her from the owners. What should i do? how can i tell for sure if she ahs been abused, physically or mentally?

ASKED BY

Hey Dogster! My family and I are going to be getting a dog soon, and I've done tons of research and this is NOT an impulse buy, but my problem is... I've done so much research that I found a dog called a "Coton de Tulear", they're lovely dogs and they are one of my favorite purebreds, but I LOVE shelter dogs. My parents like shelter dogs too, but they prefer Coton de Tulears. I know that it's their decision and I should be happy they're letting me get a dog, but there are so many dogs that need loving, caring homes. I browse PetFinder (a pet adoption site) everyday and there are a couple of dogs I love and really like. I guess my question is if you guys have any ideas about how to convince them a shelter dog can be as good as a "purebred". Thanks Dogster!

ASKED BY

Owner has three other dogs and is overwhelmed with the cost of caring for Sheba because of her dysplasia. Dog is well-behaved, happy, but has moments of obvious painful movement. Is of ideal weight for her age. Her owner hates the thought of having to put her down, but hates to watch her suffer. Personally, I don't think the dog's that bad. Is there a rescue organization who might take her? She is fixed and current on vaccinations and licensing. Please help.

ASKED BY
