How much do I feed my pup!?

I have a 7 mo 1/2 pug 1/2 dauschund pup. He is close to 20lbs and to me he dosent LOOK fat (he goes in at the waist and if i pet him i can still feel his ribs). He just has a bit of that pug build with a thick neck. Recently I started going to obedience class and the trainer told me my dog was fat! (of course i was offended since Gus is my baby) But as any pup parent I want him to be healthy. BUT she told me I should only let him eat 1/2 a cup of food a day! which is much less than my bag of dog food says to feed. I have cut back some of his food but not quite as much as she said. I WAS leaving a bowl of food out all day and he was eating about 1.5 cups per day. WHen I told her this she acted appaled! Am I missing something here??

ASKED BY

Switched to/Feeding Wellness CORE, 35-40lb adult. Trust the bag's rec. feeding quantity?

Year and a half ACD/terrier mix, no known health problems. We've had a surplus of bad food from family/friends, but after mixing the bad kibble with Wellness CORE canned for awhile, we're making the jump to the full course of dry and canned CORE.

We're reading on the bag that she only needs a little less than one cup a meal, about two cups a day tops. While I understand its more concentrated nutrition than the filler/carb-y stuff, I just feel like she's going to be starving and will go on even worse post-meal house-hunts than before, and will bother us even more during OUR meals.

Is this recommended amount what you would suggest, and is she going to feel equally satisfied? I know not to overfeed for weight and health issues, but part of me is going to feel bad, and the other is going to feel annoyed at the insuing antics, haha.

I want to apologize to Aster...

I already did so in a PM, but I feel led to apologize publicly as well. I still disagree with you, Aster, but the way I was constantly onto you...well, that was wrong. No if, ands,or buts about it. As a Christian, I am not supposed toact that way.
My pastor always says that you cannot do somemud-slinging without getting some mud on yourself. He's correct. Not only was losing my temper with Aster hurting my reputation, it was also eating away at my nerves. I'm sorry for my arrogent attitude.
And this is to Sunshine, the GSP--thank you for chewing me out. That was exactly what I needed. And I cannot blame you--or anyone else--for being angry with me. Not one bit.

Well, I won't be contstantly growling at Aster anymore. If people see fit to see myside and listen to my advice, they will.

Re (2): I have a question for Aster

Link to Wood Haven Labs. Which as well all know is an excellent site. Gives great food for thought. (She's a supporter of meat-based foods, too.) I agree with the author on many things, including that meat by-products are not bad. They shouldn't be the main ingredient though.
The "Dog Foods - Or what in the world should I buy?"--excellent artile. While I don't agree with everything in it, it supports the main point of my posts--people need to read into things for themselves.

There's that study done on dog food again fed to minks. Why in the world did they not do the study on dogs? Not like they're hard to come by.

"Therefore, meat-only diets, particularly those which must be supplemented with excessive amounts of vitamins and minerals are not recommended since they often do not provide the critical balance of nutrients required."
~labbies.com/nutri
Whoever said anything about feeding an all meat diet? In fact, when feeding a homeprepared diet, you feed mostly meat with organs, bones, and sometimes vegetables added. But a 100% meat diet? No way in tarnation.

"I also think the burden of proof is on you. "
Fair enough. Thank you for finally complying with my request yourself.

Here are the websites I have bookmarked:

I do hope you give all my links a read. Many of them are very similar to the links you gave. I read all yours. I still can't say that I agree with you--in fact, I still disagree with about 95% of what you post, but at least we understand each other a little better now.
I've been locking horns with you for quite a while now. I'm still disagreeing with you and will continue to do so unless I see fit to do otherwise, but I'm not going to wait around picking your posts apart anymore. It was wearing down my nerves. I'm just going to tell people to look at both sides, use their heads--you know my usual advice--and leave it at that.
Fact is, while I do believe in reading and considering ALL sides, I do tend to be more wary and skeptical of government-controlled sources. They've made several decisions which have made me think twice about trusting them. I'll tell you if you ask, but I've had posts completely deleted before just for bringing it up, so I'll not speak of it in this post.
Logically, why should the government-controlled organizations be any more trust-worthy than anyone else? They are just as capable of lying as Joe from across the street, and they are certainly not incapable of making mistakes.
But you've made it plain that you're just the opposite, so I guess there's no point to trying to give you sources that are not from the government.

So why have I been opposing you so strongly? Well, several reasons. The way you treated me in PMs and refused to respond to requests for resources in the past, mainly.

Well, sorry to have rambled. Anyway, last but not least, I ordered several books on canine nutrition off of Amazon.com the other night, so I'm going to be learning even more.

ASKED BY

A question for Aster.

Now don't get defensive, I'm only curious. This is not one of my rantish posts.
In a past post, as I remember, you had said that once you went on the internet and found all of the sites and pages against certain ingredients in pet foods several years ago, you immediately did some reading up to see if it was true. May I inquire as to where you did your reading up at, and will you share any of those sources with us? If you cannot link to a source, please name it and give all the details you possibly can as to why you feel that ingredients don't matter.

Thanks in advance,

Take Two--anyone know of any studies on pet food?

<<<<I asked a question like this, oh must have been a month back. I had posted as "Bounder" and I asked for studies on pet food. This is Take Two.>>>>

Most of you know my position on pet food. However, I am looking for studies. At the risk of stepping on a few toes, the one valid point that Aster has made so far is that a few people speak of studies, but do not link to them. This has not dettered me from my stance for several reasons, but nevertheless I must ask--can anyone tell me where to find any good studies about pet food?
Aster--you're welcome to contribute too, if you have anything *helpful* to contribute.

Last night, we finally got to ordering several books on canine nutrition off of Amazon.com, including a few that are used as resources for dogfoodanalysis.com. I'm hoping that they cite some studies as well.

P.S.
Oh, and I'd like to shout out a "THANKS!" to those who gave me links on one of my previous questions, the one about a dog's digestive system. I just finished reading them. All that I read were very helpful and contained useful information.
Aster--
the article you contributed must have been deleted or something. I couldn't access it.

ETA:
I also have a forum thread on this, if anyone would prefer to have an actual discussion:

I have asked a few vets what they suggest for a good food. A few said Science diet (WHICH I BELIEVE IS A HORRIBLE FOOD) and only one suggested wellness for dogs. I have done a little bit of looking around but there are just so many to choose from. Also the babies didn't help since I put samples down for them to try they ate everyone like they couldn't get enough of any of them. I'm trying to choose from California natural, Innova, EVO, chicken soup for the dog lovers soul and wellness. If you have or are using any of these give me your input on how good or bad they are.

ASKED BY
