Questions about worms? Tapeworms?

I think that our 15 yr old GS/Chow mix has tapeworms, the little rice looking ones. We are taking him to the vet Saturday morning and i heard that there is a shot they can now give for this, instead of the deworming pill. Has anyone heard of this or had to give it to their dogs??

Years ago we always got the shot, but lately all we hear about is the tablet. We haven't had any tapeworms for ages...not since they came out with Frontline and Advantage! I think they said that sometimes there were reactions to the site where they give the shot??? Abscesses or something like that. It was the same name as the tablet, Droncit. Mom thought the shot worked better than the tablet.

the only way i've heard of is the pill. but the last time i had a dog with tapeworm was about 1 1/2 years ago. It is possible and i'm sure that your vet will recommend the best for your dog. Good luck, i know tapeworm can be a pain.

SUNSHINE

make sure the shot will kill the type of tapeworm your dog has. There are a number of different tapeworms and the wormer should specify that it kills the type your dog has. I guess we'll see more tapeworms as people feed a raw diet, rabbits and other rodents as well as beef and pork all carry tapeworms. Feed your dog raw innards (or even muscle tissue) and you're asking for tapeworms.
Wish I could convince teo of mine to only eat what mom gives them, tapeworm meds get expensive.

I like to eat wild bunny poop. The pills worked really well and are easy to give. I would ask about them before getting a shot.

I don't know about the shot, but with pills you have to retreat in about 3 weeks or the worms will come back.

Dieta

usually a vet will treat them then give a preventative like Inceptor. That is if the dog tests negative for heart worm.
good luck, hope he is ok.
The only tape worm I saw was huge and long. The are shaped like a big ribbon.
Let us know he is ok.
