opinion on canine acupuncture

my 8 year old aussie has degenerative disc disease, very painful last few days, worst ever. Does acupuncture generally help these kind of situations?

Miss Buddie

I've not heard much about acupuncture, but I have a friend who's had her dog treated with chiropractic with good results.

I'm not one for alternative medicine, I don't think it works. I wouldn't try it I would think sticking a bunch of needles in the dog would be more painful that the back problems. Just my opinion. Ofcourse it may help the dog forget about the back pain.

Remington

I believe it helps. A very close friend's dog has a spinal disease, they called it "Wobbler's disease". She thought she would have to have him put down 3 years ago because he couldn't stand up well and tended to fall over alot. She started regular chiropractic and acupuncture treatments just to see if it helped. Three years later he is still moving along at a great rate. It most definitely couldn't hurt. Good luck

Molly

Well what my 5 year old golden can tell you is "thank god for Daphne" Molly was 4 when she started to exhibit symptoms of pain, lameness, chewing her leg, limping, panting and having a hard time getting up or down from the couch (yup she has couch privileges :) we xrayed. They determined that she had 8 not 7 vertebreas meaning she was longer than the average dog leading to cauda equina- the nerve compresssion would get more severe over time. Pain medication was the ONLY alternative. we tried 2 & the side effects were terrible. Her back may have felt better but mentally she was going out of her mind. I thought there had to be an alternative! I consulted another vet in SFO who suggested accupuncture. I was referred to Daphne Livoni. At Daphne's suggestion I switched molly to a raw diet with an initial regimen of chinese herbs & daily omega 3 fish oils. The results were immediate. Molly today is doing great. She sees daphne on a need be basis & is back to her goofy self. I say go for it
