What you would be looking for is a breed of dog that is independent, doesn't mind being alone. But, be warned, getting an independent dog that isn't bothered being left alone, also means that he's not going to be very interested in playing with people or very outgoing type. Also, if you adopt a dog, go for an older one so you can already know his personality and see whether or not he minds being left alone.
Heres a few quiz type things that would give you an idea of what breeds would "go" with your lifestyle:

My husband is in the military and I work in law enforcement. We both work 9-5s. Bam-Bam himself is perfectly content to be left at home, but for socialization and exercise purposes I do send him to doggy daycare 3 days a week. It has been SO WORTH IT and I would reccommend it to anybody.
The problem is that the more independent dogs are also the dogs that are smart and NEED stimulation or else they could potentially destroy your house. I got lucky in that my dog is a people puppy, but he's completely content to snore the day away.

Go to your local SPCA and ask them what dogs might work for your situation. My SPCA has a questionnaire that helps match your wants and needs to various dog personalities. Go for it!

My husband and I work We are gone from the house from 8am to 6 pm and our son is gone even longer. We have a Stafford Terrier mix and he doesn't mind being home by himself. when we come home we show him lots n lots of attention and we play with him I do walk him before I leave for walk. I mean like a mile walk so he gets some exercise and again at nite when i come home. On the weekends we take him everwhere we go !! Good Luck !!!

We have had different dogs in our life time but of all the breeds our Chihuahuas have been the sweetest, most quiet dogs we have ever had! We have had Bella 4 years now and she is the BEST dog! She never barks when we are home or when we are away for hours at a time. I have trained her by Cesar Milans method to keep a dog from barking for no reason. I would recommend going to Cesar's on line site and read up on it...you won't be sorry you did...he is so smart when it comes to training dogs and keeping them mentally balanced. Good luck with finding the right pet for your home.

We own a Jack Russell Terrier who is just under 3 and have owned him for 4 months and he is just settling in nicely. We both work full time (8.00am – 5.30pm) and my husband comes home for lunch for 30 minutes to let the dog out in the garden and have a cuddle. I would defiantly recommend getting a dog as they are so loving and giving, but would urge you to consider the following points: You must go straight home (no deviations) and cannot go out without them evening when they have been left in the day, unless someone is able to watch your dog. Going home at lunchtimes (every day) will break up the day into manageable time slots or hire a doggie walker. Although my dog does not suffer from Anxiety Separation and sleeps most of the day, it’s me who worries about him when I am not there, it does take a lot to get over but I am working on it. LOL.
