My terrier mix (20 lbs) is having back problems - probably degenerative disc . best care for him?

That question is best answered by your vet. None of us here can possibly know the extent of your dog's injury and would be foolish to attempt to try and provide you with care information. Backs are not something to fool around with... please follow your vet's advice and treatment regime.

Dieta

I would have his back x-rayed. I agree it is nothing to hesistate on. By having x-ray you will be able to see what is going on.
There are also other back diseases as well. They have no cure that I am aware of.
Then your vet can discuss the best plan for the dog.
