Marty, my almost 9 week old Golden Retriever, likes to use his dog litter box in his playpen as a pet bed to snooze and otherwise hang out in. He just tagged it this evening for the first time, yet he still lies down in it. He's had at least 8 accidents on the carpet and in his playpen outside of the litter box, yet he is able to hold it in his crate upstairs and has started to go outside almost consistently. Do I get rid of the litter box or keep trying to use it just for when he's contained in his playpen?
Dogs are pack animals, and being such are driven by basic pack instinct behaviors. Dogs (unless due to a medical problem) do not urinate or deficate in their "den". So how does a dog know what defines their "den". The pack leader tells them. So the next time marty has an accident, "roll up a newspaper real tight, and hit YOURSELF on the head, because you weren't watching him. If a puppy is not crated then they need to be tethered to you so you can watch for signs that he needs to go to the bathroom, then you can catch him before the accidents and get him outside where he can get lots of praise and reward for going in the right spot. I think it will answer all the questions that you might have on house training.

I dont understand. A litter box for a dog? My cat uses a litter box, my puppy uses the back yard and the back yard only. Throw out the cat box and teach your dog to eliminate outside the way he's suppost to.

My personal preference would be for a dog to go outside, especially a dog the size of a Golden Retriever. I would think it easier to just train him to go outside since he's not interested in using the litterbox for it's intended purpose anyway. Good luck!
