My puppy is unwilling to go into his cage to sleep. What should I do?

He's 6 months old and his name is Putty, I got him from a friend who was moving to a new home and couldn't take him with. When he had my puppy, he was ok sleeping in his little bed, but he isn't now. We tried taking tips from Dog Whisperer and he still barks and whines. I am totally clueless on what to do. Does it have to do with the fact of his previous owner leaving him? If so, how can I help him more? Is it just me not showing him that his new home is a place of comfort, not a prison of punishment?

By his little bed, do you mean his crate? If so I am surprised he is resisting it. Put a favorite toy in it. Praise him for going into it. Use treats. Feed him in the crate.

If you have to, push him into it for the night. Then lay down by the crate like you were going to sleep there. Usually a puppy may fuss a little, but then settle down and go to sleep. Once it is asleep, you can get up and go to bed. That has worked for us with a dozen or more new puppies.

He may need time to get used to his new home. Feeding him in the crate and putting toys in it with the door open might help him get used to going in again.

If he is nondestructive and housebroken, you could consider not using the crate, not everyone uses them, we don't.

However, this is a decision for you and your family.I am glad you'all took Putty in. It makes me angry when people leave their dogs behind like an old newspaper. I have turned down good jobs because my pets wouldn't have been able to move with us. Jobs come and go, dogs are real.

he has to adjust, there is alot of comforting you can do through that.
For the crate toss a piece of cheese in each and every time.
Make sure the dog can get out of the crate frequently and go outside to play.
He is pup so he will fuss and whine. He is confused at where he is and what to do. Be patient and give him lots of love also give him time to mature over the next several months.
Good luck with him and remember to reward quiet times and also going into the crate.
