My puppy has reddish-brown staining on the fur around her eyes and genitals. What causes this and how do I treat it?

I know that tear stains on the face are common enough, but the discoloration around her genitals has me concerned. She also has bad breath and had a yeast infection in her ear when we got her. She is on Orijen Puppy kibble, so I don't think the quality of food is an issue. She does not lick or scratch herself excessively.

I don't think I would worry too much about discoloration. If you need help with tearstains, here's info:

www.petsmart.com

I recommend this brand of tearstain remover. We use it for Jet and I actually recommend the pads instead of the liquid, but this is still the same brand, and I bet they both work equally well.

These look like they work well. Again, I recommend the pads because I think they are easier to use, but I have never used the liquid sort. Tearstains are not a health problem, it's just that they don't look so appealing on dogs. If these products don't work, ask your vet about recommended products. If you go to a groomer, ask your groomer. If not, look in the phone book for groomers in your area to call and ask questions for recommended tearstain removers.

Paw mail me if you need! Please do!

Lots of Licks,

Jet

It is very possible that if she had a yeast infection in her ears she is also out of wach internally. This would certainly explain the bad breath as well. The discoloration of the genitals is caused by the same thing... usually bacteria in her secretions which build up and stain the hair. I guess I would probably first try some good probiotics added to her food...
If you care to, use Angel Eyes or Tylan (the active ingredient in Angel Eyes), in her food everyday. This will clear up the problem, but this is an antibiotic, supposedly safe, however an antibiotic nonetheless. I know that Tylan is also excellent for keeping tartar from building up on teeth so perhaps, in her case, it would be something to try. Angel eyes is available over the counter, but Tylan must come from your vet. It is a powder and they only get a very tiny amount daily.

Dieta

You can wash the genital areas as that is urine causing that.
and then they make tear stain removal at the petstores.

Sounds like yeast. Angel Eyes works great for getting rid of the red stains, and , yes, it does contain an antibiotic. Make sure she's not getting treats with sugars in them. Adding a little plain yogurt with active cultures to her kibble may help, or adding some probiotics in capsule form to her diet. Get rid of plastic bowls and use stainless steel or ceramic instead. Her drinking water should be filtered as well.

my golden puppy on orijen 6fish has a little tear stain and red stains near her genitals too. i believe its related to the high protein in this diet. there are also people saying the pee is more yellow when on orijen.

by changing the ph slightly can help with the yeast buildup, kills bacterias and lessen the new stain to build (may not be able to remove already present stain).

encourage your pup to drink more water and add a little (<1tsp to 500ml) apple cider vinegar to adjust the pH level. ear infections can lead to tear stain issue as well.

the doggy might take a while to take to the new taste of water, add gradually. according to the articles i read, this method usually takes few wks to see results, and used more as a follow up / maintenance action after resolving using tear stain products to clear up most of the stains.
