My Pomeranian has been losing hair ever since she finished her heat season. She looks like a short haired dog now! help

She use to have a beautiful thick double coat. Now she looks like a smooth coated Pom. Will this grow back?? or is there something wrong. I've never owned a Pom before. This was her first heat, she is 9 months old. I read females blow their coat after a heat season and after a litter of pups, but didn't expect so much molting as she has. Thanks for any input on this. Sharon.

Hi Sharon,

Obviously, checking with your vet is the best way to get this question answered, but here is what I know about the topic:

Unless your dog is a show dog, the best solution is probably to get her spayed. My brother and his family had a registered, papered, toy Pomeranian who lost a lot of fur with every heat cycle. She ended up nearly naked, with just little tufts of hair on her body, and the vet said it was due to a hereditary problem with female hormones.

If you get your girl spayed, she will probably do a lot better with the fur loss. Also, research has proven that she will be less likely to develop breast cancer later in life, because the hormones that cause breast cancer will no longer be present. And, of course, small dogs have more difficulty with giving birth, and there are thousands of dogs needing homes, and every male in the neighborhood will be seeking your dog out, etc. Lots of reasons to talk to your vet about getting her spayed! :-)

Good luck!
