My mommy is going to California from Michigan and thinking about taking me in the cabin. I'm a Shih Tzu pup. Suggestions

I weigh about 13 lbs and I don't want to ride as freight (really now, would you?) but has anyone taken their puppy in the cabin on a flight? There would be a 1-hour flight to Chicago, a layover, then about a 3 hour flight to finish. Mom wants to hear from anyone who has had good - or BAD - experiences flying with their best furry friend. Thanks! Katie

Hi,

I've taken my 10lb dog Chip in the cabin twice now and it was no problem. The worst part is the expense - you'll need a special bag that can squish under the seat, and you have to pay dearly for pet fare and you also need a health certificate from your vet. Chip also gets a sedative, and he sleeps through the whole flight without much noise at all. Our flights have been 3-4 hours, no problem. It might be a little more complicated with the layover, but I'm sure you'd do fine.

I started a group for cabin-flying dogs but there isn't any activity yet - you're welcome to join if you like :-)

We've taken our Bichon on several flights always in the cabin. She as a soft carrier and does fine, I think she sleeps through the flight. We've dealt with layovers befor and they weren't a problem. Just go outside and go potty close to take off and asap after you land. You may want to go during the layover, if they have a place, depending on how long its been since you went and how long it'll be before you get to go again, and how long you're able to wait. If you think you'll be really nervous you might want to ask mommy to give you something to help you relax. My dog hasn't been on a flight in awhile, but I hear the kind of pat the dogs down to search them for weapons or something, so I hope you don't mind being examined by a stranger. Good luck

I've flown with my ShihTzu for over 13 years (since she was 3 months). I never had any problems with her, in fact, she was much better than most of the kids on board.
When you have a long layover, just unzip your kennel and/or take her out to sit on your lap.
I am an ex-flight attendant and can tell you, don't fly them cargo, please! I always recommend cabin flights but it's really expensive and you need to book your furbaby the same time you book your flight. Remember to have all shot records up to date, they'll need to see them.
By the way, if you need an outfit and/or accessories, please visit my mommy's website www.PuttinOnTheDogShop.com she's got some reall cool things!!!
Happy travelling!!!!
