When it happens it looks like he is eating air, but doesnt have any control over it. He hasnt ever done this before and it looks kind of uncomfortable to him. To me it almost looks as if his jaw is popping in and out of place over and over until his mouth is fully closed and then he does it again and sometimes yawns after it. I have a video of him doing it if anyone would like me to email it to them. :( I am concerned about this.
Al the description of your problems sounds a lot like what used to happen to my friend, Madison, a little Bichon. Naturally, it was very upsetting to his family. In his case, it turned out to be allergy related. They just never knew when it was going to happen, it lasted under a minute or two, and then the dog would be fine. He lived to a ripe old age. I think all they did, was comfort him when it happened -- stroked his head and neck a little and told him he was going to be O.K.
Why don't you upload your video to Al's profile page so we can have a look at what's happening. As you know, sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. Al's problem could be completely different than Madison's or one look and I'll say, yep that's exactly what he was doing too. . Have you talked to your vet about it?

I think I have occasionally seen what you are talking about. If it happens very often, I would talk to the vet about it.

My dog had this thing happening where her teeth looked like they were chattering when she closed her mouth. This went on for about 5 days. I had bought her a big hard bone to chew on from a store and she gnawed on it a lot. I think this is what caused her jaw to do this. I took the bone away and never had any more problems.

I will look at your video if you posted it on your page.
Sometimes dogs who are bulldog with gapped teeth get string or fuzz in between their teeth and gums, check that.
And sometimes a dog might aquire a nervous habit or soothing habit depending on the reason of yawning and or stretching some part of their body.
It may seem like nothing or something. It is hard to say without seeing.
