My dog is housebroken except at night when I'm asleep. She goes in the house and I don't see it until the morning.

Since I don't catch her in the act, how can I train her to go outside all the time?'

I agree Crate training is the way to go.

I agree the solution is to crate her at night and other times you are away. Google is your key to all the kooky sites on the net. Much of the advice on the net is terrible.

I discuss crating along with other parts of housebreaking at www.dogster.com

Leave it some toys. Perhaps a Kong filled with peanut butter. Don't leave anything in the crate the dog might chew up. It will do fine without even any bedding. You will come home to a safe dog and a house you can enjoy.

A dog that has not been crated since it was little, make take some work. Start out just putting its toys and treats in the crate. Praise it for going in. Feed it in the crate. This is also an easy way to maintain order at feeding time for more than one dog.

I agree crate training is good with housetraining, just don't abuse it, which a lot of people do. Its not a permanent solution to life for a dog, but its a big help in some training aspects. Experts say not to crate a dog over 4 hours at a time-kind of hard to do that at night, which most of the time the dog is in there for 8 hours.

Dieta

There was a question not long ago on this at night soiling.
I would also crate the dog, she is not housebroken. And she may not either be able to hold it all night or she is afraid.
So also buy her a bed or crate place a night light above the bed/crate so make sure it is under an outlet.
If the dog is not housebroken the crate might help her learn at night to hold it.
I don't know how much you feed in the evening, but if it is a large amount break that amount down during the day maybe. not sure what else is going on.

Hilda, CGC

I've stopped that with my dogs by shutting them into the bedroom with me. They wouldn't go where I was.

Patchs

Along with using a crate, you need to be sure you remove food and water by 6pm. After 6pm you can offer very small amounts of water during hot weather, but dont give large amounts. Ive had ppl use ice cubes so that it takes awhile to get water and still satisfiy the thurst.

Make sure you offer plenty of chances to go "out" after supper and then be sure to take the dog out one last time RIGHT BEFORE you go to bed.

Using a crate will keep the dog from releaving itself b/c dogs dont potty where they sleep. Just make sure you get the right size crate for your dog.

K-10 Von Canein

Teach your dog to bark each and every time it wants to go outside, or needs to go outside. This can be done by purchasing a few packages of cheap brand hot dogs. Offer the dog a small piece of the hot dog and tell it to speak. Demonstrate by barking yourself if needed. Do NOT give it the treat until it barks for it. Every time your dog needs to go outside, also insist that it barks prior to going out, using a speak command and a treat for complying. Do this, and without fail, he or she will night time potty train itself. If, during training, the dog does potty inside, let the dog know you are not happy with it, show why, and send it outside. If you have the dog trained to bark on command, make it bark prior to being put out. Never forget to praise it for barking for this reason.
