My Airedale has plenty of exercise as he runs on 10 acres at least every other day. He is good in car - likes to ride; behaves well with other dogs; jumps on everyone, and is scared to death of storms; we sleep together on THOSE nights! I love this dog so much as he is my constant companion, but I fear he will get hit by car if he doesn't learn COME!
I am having this same issue with my Samoyed puppy, Jasper. He's only 5 mnths old, which may be why I'm having a hard time, puppies are very easily distracted and sometimes simply won't listen! My best advice would be to do what I'm working with Jasper right now, which is:
Get a pocket full of treats, something enticing. INSIDE your home, where you're safe from cars and whatnot, randomly call out "COME" to him. As SOON as he comes to you, give him a treat. Do not tell him to sit first or anything, as he'll think he's being rewarded for the "sit" instead of the "come."
Do this several times a day. Until he understands the "come" command. DON'T let him see the treat before you give it to him though, because of course he'll come to you then, if he KNOWS you have it.
Let him come of his own free will, then surprise him with a reward. When you say come, try to sound excited, like there's something exciting he'll miss if he doesn't come!
Good luck!

You have to make yourself more exciting than whatever else has his attention. You can do this by talking in a high-pitched voice, running in the opposite direction, or even laying down on the ground. That said, he should NEVER be allowed off-lead in an unfenced area until you have his recall down as close to 100% as possible. When you call him, you should start praising him as soon as he starts coming toward you, getting more and more excited as he gets closer - then give him a great treat when he arrives. NEVER call him to punish him, and don't only call him when you are going to stop playtime - he should learn that coming to you is the best thing in the world, not that it means playtime is over. And once you get come down, make sure to get drop from a distance so if you call him from across the road you can get him to stop if a car suddenly appears.

He very well may get hit by a car.. this is one of the most important things to learn.
I was told always treat a dog if they come.
ALWAYS.
Then they learn that listening to this command is a good one.
That they get something they want.
So, high valued treats when teaching this one.
DO NOT let your dog run free (off lead) if you are practicing in field.
What we did was practice in isle in a store.
Someone held her lead then let go while I called "Bella come".. she came I treated.
(She could only go to me or stay there.. it was an isle)
You can get an extended lead clip it to them and go into a field.
They can only go so far.. then call.
They can either stay out so far.. or come.
Remember to have other people calling your dog as well.
They need to learn to not only obey you, but everyone.
Bella has a good recall, but did NOT listen to my step-mother and ran into the road on saturday. (I was not there)

I am working on this also! For me I am trying to teach the come command where there aren't any distrations, just so she's used to coming when I call. it works great when nothing is around and she knows she's getting a treat.
I think teaching without distractions first, then progress to a little bit of distractions, then to doing it fully outdoors with traffic.

You should purchase yourself a 30 ft lead (I got mine from a local horse supply store, much cheaper) and start from there. Using a leash is very important, you still have control of your dog, he won't be able to take off on you.
Stand in front of your dog and tell him to sit and stay. Walk to the end of the leash and tell him to come, act very excited. When he does come praise like crazy and an awesome treat. I used bits of cooked steak or chicken, the better the treat, the more they want it. When he has mastered the 30 ft, you can add on to your lead giving a greater distance.
Until you are 110% sure on your recall, never allow your dog off leash. The changes of him getting hurt is very high when you cannot call your dog back.

For every time you have said "COME" and he has not- you just further UNTRAINED that command! You may want to think about starting from scratch with a new word like HERE or FRONT.
Baby Steps. Thats the best advice I could give you. Start over from step 1 as if he was a 4 MONTH old! Have him on a leash. Say "COME" (or whatever word you choose to use) THEN take 1 step backward and reward him with a treat when he comes to you. Pea sized pieces of treat are all you need, and the smelllier the better (hot dogs, chicken, liver). Its important to say the command-WAIT- and THEN step backward so he lears the WORD- AND the intended behavior. Do that a few times, then build up to a few steps back. Its also important to remember to say "come" ONLY ONCE!!! You want the command to be "COME", not " COME COME COME COME!!"
There are also games. Say come, then run a few paces away from him and toss a treat in front of your running path when he gets to you. Start running the other way and repeat.

star over with training change the word and put it with the dogs name and treat everytime!!!. never ever use the dogs name when he's in trouble..that causes your baby to run away from his name in fear of repurcussion..but yes, you have to be more interesting than anything else to him.good ideas on here already for playing and training!

As an Airedale owner again and again...the answer is likely two things.
1. You might be too harsh in your calling (they're hyper sensitive)
2. There's no reason to come...not interested in the hum drum reason to go home. Airedale's are very smart and if it's boring, or you're not interesting...then he will be occupied elsewhere. Have fun with the guy.
