Kira always goes crazy when she sees the brush or scissors. She nips at us when we try to groom her, and just hates it and it is really getting to the point where we have neglected brushing her because she is a hassle.
My mom thinks there is nothing we can do except buy something professional groomers have to keep her still, but do we have to go to those measures. She is not afraid of the brush, just hates being groomed.
Please help, it would be so appreicated!!!
Hi Kira!
I hate being brushed, too, so I know how you feel! Here is something for your humans to try:
1. Put the brush and/or scissors on the floor near you.
2. As soon as you look at it, they give you a treat and praise you.
3. If you go toward the tools, more treats and praises.
4. Put the implements away.
The next day, the same procedure, until you are being rewarded for sniffing the scissors and brush. Once you are approaching them reliably, have your humans pick them up - but still, not approach you with them. Soon, you will be happy to see them pick up the scissors and/or brush!
Next, your humans should slowly move the brush or scissors toward you. If you stay still, you get more treats and praise! And so on... Yes, it will take a while, and if you regress, they will have to back-track, but once you associate these items with good things, you will be much more tolerant of them touching you, and eventually grooming you.
I have a way to extinguish the nipping, but am out of room!

if your samoyed it that bad and hates to be groomed then i would suggest to have her sudated while she is being groomed. i see this all the time at my grooming shop were other dogs that are mean and bite owners will have the dog sadated and it makes our job easer and less stressful on the dog and us as well. talk to your vet and see what thay think.
