My 1yr. old Basset/Beagle uses his paws constantly and he's always scratching our faces! How do we get him to stop?

He's constantly licking and lightly biting us too. He's not aggressive at all, just disrespectful and won't listen when we correct him.

I would talk to a trainer and have him trained.

Have you ever watching Victoria Stillwell on It's Me or the Dog? She gets extremely disapproving when dogs do this sort of thing. No whiny stop, stop, no, no, no. Stand up and freeze the air with your chilling disapproval of this behavior. When when he stops, praise him. He will jump again, freeze again. Then when he is off, praise.

Katie

Hi there!

I agree with the "freezing" idea- when he misbehaves, don't make eye contact or touch him, don't talk to him, just ignore him. He may get insistent. When Katie was new to us, we used the "ah-ah" sound as a cue that she was about to go outside for five minutes. Whenever she nipped, pawed, or jumped on us, we said "ah, ah" and quickly and silently put her out in the yard. Five minutes later, she got to come back in. She learned really fast that breaking a house rule would lead to isolation, and she wanted to be with us!

Make sure that everyone in your house agrees on what will be tolerated and what will lead to isolation, so your dog learns the rules more quickly.

Go to www.k9techsupport.com and choose one of the commands to start training. Use a happy voice and yummy treats, and start with an easy one, like "sit." Once he learns it, you can have him sit whenever he paws or scratches you.

Never yell or hit, of course! Good luck!
