You should at least call the vet, explain your situation, and ask for some treatment advice. Chances are they'll ask you to bring your dog in for an examination, which may be worth the bill. Take the opportunity to get as many things checked out and ask as many questions as possible. It might be your best option to getting your dog healthy. Good luck!

I also think the vet is your best chance of helping your dog.
Chances are, he has a case of kennel cough. Most vets give antibiotics for this, even though it is a virus (antibiotics don't work on viruses) so that they can prevent secondary infections like bacterial infections or pneumonia from setting in.
At 12 years old, your dog is at serious risk for pneumonia and other complications, so I wouldn't try any home remedies as a substitute for getting him to the vet.
Also, remember that this is HIGHLY contagious, and since there are a lot of viruses responsible for kennel cough, even vaccinated dogs can catch it. Don't take your dog for walks or to the park until he's no longer sneezing or coughing. The virus can live on damp grass for up to a couple of days.
Good luck, hope he's better soon!
