Mommy frustrated with my housetraining.

I'm an 8 week old puppy now and I was having a great sucess with my crate training as well as using a pee pad if Mommy didn't catch me in time. I was babysat one night at my house with the baby while Mommy and Daddy were out and now for some reason I think it's okay to pee in the house all over again. Mommy has tried to be persistant but after having 10 accidents today, even if I had just come in from a long walk she is starting to get frustrated. Do you have any suggestions for her?

Don't worry this is perfectly normal. At 8 weeks your pup doesn't have any bladder/bowel control and its to be expected that she will have many accidents during the day. Full bladder control isn't obtained till about 8 months give or take. However here are some things you can do to help a bit:

-Take her out after the following times: when you wake up, before you go to sleep, after meals, after play time, before crating, and in the middle of the night.

-Clean up the accidents really good or else the smell only tells her that its ok to go potty in that spot again.

-Keep a log of when Nova goes potty after meals, this way you know more or less about when she'll go.

That being said, keep consistent and don't despair. While its normal for accidents to happen it isn't always OK. So you take Nova out whenever they happen. Here is a link of a site that will help you with potty training, hope it helps: k9domain.web.officelive.com

You're 8 weeks old. Enough said.
A) Nova is far too young to be able to hold her bladder at all and
B) she's too young to fully understand what's expected of her yet. That comes with time and patience.
Every pup will make mistakes until it is clear to them 100% that they need to go where you want them to, and when they are able to actually hold their bladder. I think you're expecting too much out of such a young puppy. Just be patient and consistent.

Aster

At 8 weeks old, a puppy should be learning, but much still depends on you. Done right accidents should be infrequent at 3 months and rare at 4 months. I think you will find the material at www.dogster.com useful.

Pepper

You took home a 6 week old GSD.
A breed that matures later than many other dog breeds. That includes the bladder and bowels.

Crate puppy when you are not able to watch her. Leash her to you when you can. Gate her in one or two rooms with solid floors so she isn't wrecking carpets.

Always look for sniffing, circling or squatting then take her out to potty. Reward potty outside with praise and treats. Interrupt any indoor accidents/attempts with a "NO!", and take her out to finish. Don't clean up accidents while she is around. Deordorize well so she does not use the spot again. Don't punish, don't rub her nose in it, don't get upset. It's your job as the higher intellegence to watch her and get her outside in time and teach her what is good.

Lastly - she is VERY young - she came home too soon - be patient she needs more time. And hire a more dog knowledgeable sitter from now on.

Fritz

Pepper is 100% correct. No punishment, watch your puppy closely, NO and rush out the door for any accidents, praise for every outside success. Your puppy is really young; most don't even go home until 8 or 10 weeks.

Ch. Ali, CGC

At 8 weeks old my pups are still with their Mom and littermates! While they are now using the "correct" end of their puppy pen, they still have very little control of bladder and bowels.
Expecting a completely housetrained pup at her age is completely unrealistic! Give her some time!

Dieta

Yep it is impossible to train a 8 week old, and even up to 8 months sometimes.
So utilize your crate more when you are not looking every second
Also out every hour, 1/2 hr after eating and drinking.
10 accidents is normal, but you must utilize crate so it is not ruining the carpet.
Some yard time, consistent taking out and praising the pup outside when she goes in time will pay off. good luck.

SUNSHINE

Your being watchful and feeding and watering you pup at regular intervals will do much to help'train' the dog. Realize you also need training so you can recognize the signals the pup gives. Crate is GREAT, use it wisely.
ALWAYS have your pup sleep in the crate. The minute she wakes up PICK HER UP AND CARRY her outside. This way she doesn't get the opportunity to make a mistake. PRAISE her when she does her business, give her some attention and enough time to complete her toileting.Feed her and give her water when she gets in and once again, bring her outside about a half hour after. If she doesn't go right away play some "running around" games, she will go after some activity. At this point I'd always let my pups run around inside for about an hour, bring them out again, the put the in the crate for a nap.Takes a bit of time, but they really are like babies, just as a baby must learn where to "go" so must a pup.I always had my pups house trained(thishouse,Iwarned),@8wks,it IS doable

Ruby

I took Ruby home at 7 weeks, and by the 3rd day she didnt have anymore accidents in the house. I don't think this is all that common but it's do-able which is because I am home all day every day because I am a stay at home mom with two babies. I took her outside shortly after every meal and drink......I took her out after naps and play. When she did her business outside I praised and gave treats. When I left the house she went in her crate and when I returned I took her out immediately. It becomes habit, and soon you will be able to read your puppy's body language. Now Ruby is 4 months, fully house trained. She cries at the back door when she needs to go potty. You have to committ to being home most of the day and watch the puppy constantly because if your pup goes potty in the house and you are not paying attention then she will continue to go potty in the house. This is because she doesnt hear a no or is not corrected by being brought outside. Good luck!
