Learning command "paw"...having a hard time connectig.

Our backyard isn't fenced in so we have our girl on a 20' leash while she's outside, she's mastered the sit and wait for me to say 'ok' for her to leave the door way when she comes in; but now I'm trying to work on a new command and it's just not getting across. I check her paw to know if she's wet or not when she comes in and I've been associating touching her paw with the command 'paw'. But it's not connecting...any tips? Again I'm a first time dog owner so I know there's more that I could be doing to help her learn I just don't know what that is. I've tried holding a treat while doing it too and she just focuses on the treat and wont do anything else. Any tips are appreciated.

Clicker training works wonders for this. Start out by charging up the clicker - click, treat, click, treat, click treat. Do this about 25 times. When you see that she begins anticipating the treat when she hears the click, then you will know she's got it.

The next step is to show her a treat, and then hold it in your closed fist. Wait for her to try and figure out how to get it. When she begins to paw at your hand (and it shouldn't take long), click and treat. Once she has begun to do that regularly, then add the word Paw. Eventually, you will be able to cue her with the word paw to get her to give you her paw. It took me about 2 days to teach Rusty using this method.

Good luck!

have you touched the paw and tapped your leg or where ever you are trying to get her paw to.?
Touching the paw or patting the chest lightly to make contact might help. Or have a object that she can place the paw on. Like a walking cane or a box, whatever you choose. Place the box outside and ask the dog to place the paw there by encouragement when she does put the food on the box.
