Unfortunately most of the semi-moist dog foods are filled with sugar in the form of corn syrup and other sugars. They actually even taste sweet!!! Yet millions of people will buy them, mostly because of slick advertising. Stories like yours do not get the publicity they should!! Thank you for bringing it to everyone's attention thru this forum. Sadly, you are not alone in losing your pet from one of these highly advertised "poisons". I like the above comparison to McDonald's foods!

I see alot of food like Kibble and bits that I see people buy all the time. My friend uses Beneful and used a website to rate it and it had a negative 22 score! Buying that kind of food for your animals is like feeding McDonald's everyday. You really have to be careful. Even those so called good foods are horrible once you read the ingredients.

Jack

I'm so sorry to hear about this.

It could be that the food was too fatty for her and she slowly developed isulin resistance without you knowing. There are often no symtoms.

Some dogs can actually live long, fairly healthy lives on this kind of food, but for many others, the low quality takes it's toll.

I hope you don't beat yourself up about this. You were trying to be a good owner and you had no idea. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry!...& to think that some people on Dogster think that all dog foods are created equal...Sad.

Chocolate

you are too right! It's just like eating twinkies for each meal, plus a bunch of multi-vitamins. just because the companies put vitmains in it doesn't automatically mean healthy.

Join the club and check the dogster food forum, we always have a great time talking smack about junk pet foods. :)) and praising the good.

Pepper

It's twinkies or tortilla chips....
Most dog food is whole ground CORN. It was dark brown in the bowl, but it's "Frito" yellow on the lawn??? Corn chips. High in fast Carbs, it will make a dog fat, mess up it's sugar (diabetes) and cause allergies.
I was shocked to read the label on a "natural" training treat I have been buying. Sugar, two forms of corn, salt, wheat. What the he??
I feed from the feed store, and only what I can read and understand (I'm afraid of "animal digest", think about it)

Aster

Please don't accept the guilt for what you fed. Dogs can develop diabetes on any diet. How old was she?

The dog foods are all formulated to be complete and balanced diets. Some of them may use less attractive ingredients, but the final product is a healthy food. Comparing them to Twinkies or MacDonalds is outrageous and shows a total lack of knowledge of nutrition. The lower end foods are more like the carefully balanced meals served in institutions, perhaps unattractive, but healthy.

Remember, much of what you read about dog food originated with somebody that was selling something. Most of what I know about dog food, I learned from a program that isn't selling anything, but giving away dogs they spent a fortune training.
