My 8-year old Boxer mix is on prescription K/D food, but I want to do more!
You can!
There are email lists on Yahoo that are extremely helpful. I read K9KidneyDiet and there is K9Kidney. The posters are very knowledgeable and will tweak your dog's treatment and help you ask the right questions. Dogaware has a terrific page on the subject complete with further readings.
My 15.5 year old mixed breed was diagnosed 2 years ago is is still kicking. She gets special home made food for two reasons. One - that food recall two years ago. Two - she will NOT drink water and that script food plus water is NASTY! [Conveniently I never noticed the canned food sitting next to the kibble] She also gets subcutaneous fluids which made a huge difference in how she feels. She feels better today with higher lab numbers than when she was diagnosed! The only real medicine she gets is Pepcid so she doesn't have an acid stomach and can eat.
Many dogs live long happy lives after this diagnosis. You do have to take it seriously and treat it even if the dog acts just fine.
Good luck!

Yes, I have been in the pet industry for over 25 years. When Haus was diagnosed with kidney disease and they recommended Hills K/D I did alot of research and found that it has alot of fillers and additives that can actually harm your dog.I put him on the simple formula of Wellness with one protein and one carb. His blood work started looking better in the 1st few weeks and he lived for 5 more years and passed from heart issues, not kidney problems. His blood work done for kidney values was 75% better then it was when he was diagnosed.
GOOD LUCK

Oh, I understand and have many pet friends with canine and feline kidney disease.
There is home-cooking as a choice for you!
The K/D hills Rx diet is ok, but puts weight on many pets because of all the junk fillers.
