I am the proud parent to a beautiful large male St. bernard and asweet little toy poodle. She has come into heat and I was wondering if I should worry about my max being able to mate with her! Is this even possible?? should I keep her panties on her all the time even when she is not bleeding to avoid this? Help!
You didn't say how old they are, but when and if they are the appropriate age, you need to fix them BOTH and then you won't need to stress about this.
This is, however, a BIG DEAL!! YES he can mate with her, and YES she can get pregnant this way. The problem is is that she is considerably smaller than he is - the puppies can and will be larger and this can and will ultimately kill your female. There is not enough room for the puppies to grow, and even if they did make it to the point of birthing, she is way to small to deliver Saint Bernard puppies.
It is SO important that you have your dogs spayed and neutered. You will need to keep them separated always - panties won't do enough because those can be removed.
Best of luck...

How about keeping them separated until you get them both altered. If it does happen, it will kill your poodle before you are able to find out if she's pregnant.

Totally agree with Sergeant. They can breed regardless of size difference. This WILL be extremely dangerous if not fatal to the female.
If you insist on keeping them unaltered, just putting the female in "panties" is not going to cut it. They have to be 100% separated at ALL times during the female's heat - which YES, lasts longer than just the bleeding period. A tie can occur in the blink of an eye. They can mate through crates and chain link fences. They must NEVER be unsupervised for even a moment during the ENTIRE heat cycle. Do not let them out to potty together, eat together -- nothing.
Keeping 2 intact animals together can be done but it is going to take an EXTREME amount of diligence and absolutely no slip-ups on your part - especially since the outcome would be so dangerous if they did mate. Much luck.

It can absolutely happen and it's very dangerous for your poodle. If you don't want them to mate, have them both fixed.

Yes, he can. Keep your guard up, and you may want to consider spaying and neutering them both.
Anyway, good luck.

These posts seem to elicit the most response from members and for good reason.
I don't mean to pile it on, but I'm another one who really thinks that you should spay and neuter your dogs. Why in the world would you want to worry about this every single time your dog comes into heat. And your worries don't end there. You have the added worry of your Saint "accidently" mating with someone else's dog.
Male dogs can smell a dog in heat from a long ways away, putting "panties" on her won't stop a dog from mounting her.
If you can't afford to fix both of them, go to your vet and see if you can work something out. There really isn't a reason in this day and age to have intact animals any more, unless you plan on breeding them, but it sounds like you're not a breeder. So do the shelters, that take care of all the unwanted dogs, a favor and get your dogs fixed.

Yes it is possible for any breed of dog to breed with another, thats why we have Labrador/Dachshund mixes and such. It is extremely dangerous for your poodle to have a St. Berner mix pup. I read a story of someones Lab/Chow breeding with a Chi/Pom and the Chi mix had to have an emergency c-section in order to save their lives, even at birth the puppy was almost as big as the mother!
Keep them seperated until she isn't in heat anymore if you must keep them intact, this is way harder then it sounds, a determined male dog isn't going to stop at anything to get to a female in heat.
Ideally you would get them both fixed, healthier and happier for all.
