I've had my schnauzer since he was about 3months old (he's 7months now). The first day we brought him home he had eye crusties stuck to the hair near the inner eye. We took him to the vet the next day for an overall general exam. The vet checked his eyes and said he was healthy. She mentioned that at times a dog's eye can get irriated. Every night i have to clean out his eyes to take the gook out (its brownish in color). If i wait too long it harden and sticks to the hair and I have to put a damp cloth over it to soften it. One eye is also always a little pink in the corner and sometimes the other eye acts up. I'm assuming it can be allergies bc he seems to sneeze a couple times a day. I took him off of puppy chow when we first got him and hes been eating Innova for months. He's seen the vet quite a few times for shots and checkups and we're told he's quite healthy. It doesnt seem to bother him. I never see him pawing at his eyes. Any idea what can be causing this? Thanks!
Hi there!
Does your Schnauzer dig holes in the yard? Perhaps he's getting dirt in his eyes... or if you have a lot of flowering plants, he could have pollen or other debris falling into his eyes.
One of my dog park friends is a tall, slender, bouncy Standard Poodle who has this same issue. She is very healthy and active, but she always has some gook in her eyes. Her owner told me she has allergies, but she doesn't need medication.
Sometimes Katie gets gooky eyes, but in her case, it's white, yellowish, or greenish. It's always been diagnosed as a minor infection that clears up with eye drops. My vet has had to prescribe them three times in the past year or so.
I'm glad your vet says there's no health issues. Perhaps other Dogster folks will have other ideas about why this is happening... Good luck!
Katie
