I was recently sent a letter from our home owner's insurance company that stated that we have to remove our pit bull from the property or have our policy cancelled. Our dog is a family dog and has never growled nor made any threatening gestures toward a human or any other animal. I don't want him to go but I fear that there is nothing that can be done. Is there a good home with dog lovers that will give my best friend
a loving home?

You could also try seeing whether there are other homeowners' insurance companies who will insure you with a Pittie on the premises, or whether you can purchase an umbrella policy that will cover your dog.

You know, instead of looking for a new home for the dog - try the obvious first.

You should call every insurance company known to man and change company's. We have State Farm and they are fine with our dogs and have never asked what breed of dogs we own. I believe some insurance company's will cover Pit Bulls as long as they haven't bitten anyone. If people would start boycotting these company's maybe they would get a brain.

I have heard that State Farm and Allstate do no discriminate based on your dog's breed. It would be a real shame to get rid of your companion because some company you are paying has a problem with your dog. You shouldn't let them have the opportunity to cancel your policy- you should put it in writing that you are dumping them because of their asinine policy regarding dog breeds and blanket discrimination.

Just here to sympathize...
Don't you hate breed bias?

We also have State Farm and have never had any problem...when we first got the insurance they did ask what kind of dog(s) we had and I told them a rottweiler pup, they asked me if she was going to be trained for a guard dog and I said no and there was never any question after that, plus we do have a fence all the way around our back yard. I would suggest dropping the insurance you have and finding someone else who is not biased to dog breeds

Get your dog a canine good citizen certificate and find another insurance company. You shouldn't have to get rid of a family member.

The Canine Good Citizen certificate test puts your dog through temperament testing. Many insurance companies give discounts if your dog has one.

well what u can do is get a doctors note from your family doctor that your dog is to benefit to you due social entertainment and he comes you down... thats all its a law or call the humain society of the state u live in they have their attorneys that can persue the paperwork defending your dog.... He is a part of the family and its not a law that indicates that you need to get rid of your dog.. If your pet stays with you for more then 3 months he or she consders your family......

Who told your insurance company you had a pit? Who's your best friend--your insurance company or your pit? I agree with everyone else: Get rid of the insurance company! Tell the next one you have a terrier--that's not a lie! I've had a shepard mix, a collie mix, & a lab mix. Guess what? The other half of all of them was pit. The other breeds are what were on my vet records, license & rabies info. My vet goes along with this because there is prejudice, and maybe I'm the Uncle Tom of the dog world (please excuse the politically incorrect expression), but pits are great family dogs and companions and don't deserve the rep. Most people don't even know WHAT they are unless you tell them.
