Zoe

I think she may have eaten something...help!

Zoe escaped from her crate yesterday while I was at work, and managed to pull up some carpet. There was a ton of carpet pad everywhere....Last night the diarrhea started and now there's diarrhea and vomiting. There's no tenderness in her belly, shes still drinking and has an appetite. My vet is gone for the weekend...what works to soothe her belly a bit? Would pumpkin puree be alright?

Thanks!

I would withhold food for 24 hours and then a bland diet.

If a dog is having trouble keeping anything down or continuing diarrhea try this out of the manual I have from a large, knowledgeable dog guide school.

Bland recovery diet for dogs.

3 parts cooked rice, one part boiled hamburger or chicken, or cottage cheese. I think you can substitute boiled potatoes for the rice. Once in an emergency, we bought a plain baked potato from Wendy's.

This is meant for short time settling a dog's digestive tract. It is not the complete and balanced diet they need long term. I have seen it work.

She could have a blockage which is very serious. Likely she will be OK over the weekend, but should go to the vet Monday if she hasn't settled down.

The pumpkin may be Ok too if it isn't spiced.

I would NOT give any pumpkin as this is generally given to firm up stools. In your particular case, if there is something in her belly, you want it to try to pass and move along, not bind it up. The vomitting + diarrhea is a sign there is probably foreign materials in her stomach. On a side note, make sure if you ever do give pumpkin it is the plain puree not the pie mix.

For upset tummies, you can give yogurt to help coat and aid digestion. You can give Pepto or Pepcid. I would hold off food for a day, even though she is still eating (which is a good sign) if YOU had stuff coming out of each end you probably wouldnt want to add more *fuel* into your body. The fast will help to restart her system and then you can gradually (over a day or 3) put her on bland food then back to her normal food- ASSUMING her diarrhea/vomitting subsides.

If you are worried, find an emergency vet. Or else keep an eye on stool for any blood or black/tar color. You will need to go to the vet then.

Echo

When my dog had an upset stomach a bland diet worked best ! rice and chicken !!!! On another note.
Ask the people at your vets office who they recommended for an emergency, reassure them that your not going to stay with the other vet but your dog needs seen !!!

When in doubt, get em checked out !!

SUNSHINE

Zoe might have eaten carpet padding which due to the nature of it would swell if ingested. If it was me,I think I'd feed her VERY lightly and add some olive oil to her food, just about a TBSP. Pepto is a good first aid too as it can soak up some toxins a bit, I know our vet reccomends it. Could be some chemicals(especially pesticides) OR MAYBE she had a reason to tear up that carpet and ate the evidence. This is the time of year for rodent intrusions. I don't think I'd feed rice or anything that migh "clog up" the works, maybe just some boiled chicken in big chunks, let her have to chew it to get some saliva going down the chute too.Keep an eye on what she upchucks, sounds gross but pick thru it (get a paper plate and a stick) it might be a clue as to what she has eaten. If you see pieces of carpet/ padding/ hair or hide of an animal, report it to the vet if/when you go. Look around the REST of the house too.Check the bathroom.I once had a wacky girl that ate a bar of IVORY SOAP,she wasOK.

Dieta

For the sake of your worrying I would take her to the vet for a stomach/intestine x-ray consuming foreign material there is always a risk of a blockage.
That is what i would do.
