I recently adopted a 3year old coon hound that came from a puppy mill. I'm having house training issues with her.

She has a dog door and 24 hr. access to her yard. She'll pee on a walk several times or at the dog park or most often, in the house. She will not go in the yard. She loves the dog door and being out in the back, just not for her bathroom. It's starting to get cold outside and it will be difficult to walk her 3 times a day so that she can pee when she can go outside. Any ideas??

First thing I have to ask is was she being used for breeding ?? A lot of times if a animal is bred too many times they will have problems with their bladder. The only other thing I can suggest is that you get a crate (cage). Cage her as much as you can. Only take her out to eat and go to the restroom unless you are able to supervise her at all times. Make sure the crate is only big enough for her to stand up and lay down. Dogs will not pee where they sleep that is way it has to be on the smaller side. Everytime you take her out, take her straight outside NO PIT STOPS. keep lots of treats on hand!, I also think that she might not have been potty trained.
I crate trained my puppy and she was potty trained within 2 weeks...than I passed the crate on to another puppy in need !
Happy training !!!
Hope I helped you a little bit !

Being that she came from a puppy mill she probably peed and pooped where she lived. Either in a large cage or in some kennel. She has no idea that she's supposed to only go outside. She's just used to going when she's got to go.
When you're walking with her and she pees, you praise her like crazy. Lots of "good girl" and lots of tummy rubs. When it looks like she's going to go again, right before she goes say "go potty" and when she does go, say it again and when she's done, lots and lots of praise. Praise every time she goes. Not just once, every time. Maybe even give a treat when she's gone.
Even though it's going to get cold soon she should be able to learn to run outside, pee/poop in the snow and come back in. That's where the "go potty" comes in handy.
She'll learn don't worry. You have to undo 3 yrs of her not having any boundries or rules to live by. Just be consistent and calm when you teach her potty manners and she will be peeing on command in no time.
Be patient.

I hate dog doors. There is no substitute for training. If you want her to toilet in the yard you have to teach her to do so. Unfortunately crating is not going to help you with her. Mill dogs live the entire time in a tiny cage, no bathroom breaks - just a wire floor so the poop and pee fall under the cage.
As with puppies, if you put a "mistake" in the yard and tell the dog good dog, she will hopefully start to get the idea. Only walk her in the yard for a while. Leash her inside and out until she is trained so you can stop the mistakes and reward the good pottys. Keeping her leashed indoors prevents her from toileting inside without getting caught! When she starts to go indoors, say "NO" and take her out. Pick a command word, "potty", whatever to link to the action. Treat & praise lots everytime she "potties" outdoors.

It is going to be difficult for her to understand that now she can go outside to pee.
Try to wipe up the pee in the house with an old towel that you can place outside. That will enable you to take her scent out there. Then when she pees out there , praise her verbally like crazy, give her even a tid bit to eat.
Also straw has worked by placing it on the ground in a small circle. Throw your towel in the center of that also. good luck.
