i need help ASAP! my 13 month old lab is on her 19th day of her heat cycle. my daughter accidentally let her out

in the 45 seconds it took me to run out the door and grab her she was already locked up with my male lab. my vet says i have 3 choices; one let nature run its course and possibly have puppies now even though she is too young in my opinion, two give her a pill that will make her miscarry if she is pregnant but that has risks of bleeding and internal damage or 3 do an emergency spay which will cost $400 which i don't have right this minute--- Ideas? Suggestions? Advice?

I would personally do the Emergency Spay.

Unless you have the knowledge to responsibly and correctly raise a littler of puppies, I'd go with the emergency spay. Consider asking for donations, or going to a vet that charges less if you need to.

If you decide to let nature run it's course, I can provide you with an article on newborn puppy care, but keep in mind that it is not a "how-to manual" and that there is much more to the subject that just one article can cover

Sparky

I'd suggest an Emergency Spay. Check with your vet.

Bella

I would do the Emergency Spay. There's too many risks for a young dog to have puppies. Ask your vet about payment plans.

Bam-Bam, CGC

I would do the emergency spay... If you think the $400 is expensive, then raising puppies would be out of the question because what if she has complications and needs a c-section? What if she gets mastitis and the pups all need to be formula fed? And those first shots and wormings are expensive too. I personally don't trust the pill because I just haven't seen it used widely enough to be more comfortable with it. Also, you were probably planning on getting her spayed down the road anyhow, so might as well get it done now!

Bilbo

Emergency spay.

Indeed, if $400 is something you cannot afford, you have no buisness owning intact dogs- much less a pair. Raising puppies will cost far more then $400 and, since your dog is so young, you can expect some complications- the cost to fix these may be about the cost of the spay or more.

Sativa

I would do the abort/spay. Your dog is really too young to have pups being a pup herself. Like I think it was bam bam that said you think $400 is bad what if something happens when she has the pups, complication can arrise expecialy since she is so young. She could need a c-section or worse even die if things go terribly wrong. Sativa had to have a spay/abort and that was a lot better then letting her have the pups she would have had. Also you could try going to the humane society or a low cost clinic to perfore the surgery.

If you don't have the money for an emergency spay, where are you going to get the money to take care of the puppies?
There are low cost spay and neuter clinics that may perform a spay/abort. Contact your local shelter and see if they know of any vets that will do it and will let you make payments.

Max (aka Sebastian)

I;m sorry, but have to agree with everyone else. A spay seems like the smartest choice. Your poor pup is too young to mother puppies, there probably will be complications which could exceed the $400 spay cost. Also there is vetting the pups and shots and food and the mothers health care.
Plus the time it will take for you to care for the pups if she refuses them.
There is just so much that could go wrong, and I'd hate for you dog to suffer.
Maybe contact other vets in your area and see if any will offer a payment plan, maybe if you explain, they will work with you.
Good luck.

Packer

call around other clinics..Id try rescue groups they know the best.and get prices..soon.do the spay.at 13 months she should have been spayed already.prevent a tragic future for puppies and the trauma she would have to endure by having them.
Shame on you..the male lab should be fixed as well unless you had future plans on becoming a another backyard breeder pushing puppies out into a world where the majority of them will end up abused, euthenized in a shelter,abandoned....
